‘It’s contentious’ within the Giants’ draft room

Have the New York Giants closed the door on selecting Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders at No. 3 overall in the 2025 NFL draft, or is a last-minute private workout suggestive of something else?

It’s an interesting dynamic any way you slice it, and it’s left some NFL executives and draft analysts to speculate.

Long-time NFL insider and commentator, Todd McShay, spoke to a rival general manager this week and learned that the Giants may be split on Sanders — some want him at No. 3 overall, while others feel that would be an overdraft.

“It’s a little bit contentious inside the Giants’ draft room,” McShay said on The Ryen Russillo Podcast. “There are some people that are pushing hard for Shedeur.”

How another general manager would come about that information is not something McShay elaborated on, but he did hint that some of friction may be coming from the top of the organization down.

“I also wonder, too, at this point in time with ownership — we hear a lot of stories after the fact of ownership getting involved when it comes to the quarterback position and drafting that high,” McShay said. “So, that part is fascinating.”

The Giants will select a quarterback at some point during the draft, but Sanders at No. 3 feels too rich for the team’s blood. Head coach Brian Daboll is likely leading the charge for him more than John Mara or Steve Tisch, while general manager Joe Schoen is likely leaning toward an impact player like Abdul Carter or Travis Hunter.

Who wins out? We’ll know in a little over a week when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell takes the podium in Green Bay.
