As someone who thinks about the 1995 film Clueless most days of my life (especially when I can’t find anything to wear that I don’t hate and start longing for Cher Horowitz’s ahead-of-its-time online closet-organizer), I was obviously delighted to learn that Cher was rumored to be headed back our way in a Clueless sequel series, starring none other than Alicia Silverstone in a reprisal of her original role.
I’m on the record as saying that we, as a culture, are plagued by “too many reboots” syndrome, but this bit of cynicism obviously doesn’t apply to Clueless, a movie (and TV show, for that matter) that I will always want more of. The film’s original writer and director, Amy Heckerling, will executive produce the new Peacock show alongside Jordan Weiss and The O.C. and Gossip Girl demigods Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, which bodes well; but to be honest, whether this reboot is good or bad or somewhere in between, it barely matters! Below, find all the questions I have about Peacock’s new Clueless sequel series:
- Is Paul Rudd coming back as Cher’s stepbrother-slash-boyfriend?
- For that matter…whither Stacey Dash?
- Is Mel, Cher’s angry lawyer father…dead on the reboot series?
- If he is dead, will I ever stop crying?
- Did Cher grow up into a pro bono lawyer? A stylist?
- Is her closet going to get, to quote my colleague Liam Hess, “a really cringe AI-era update”?
- To quote another colleague, Keaton Bell: “There are no malls anymore, where is Cher going to shop?”
- Is this show inevitably going to be sponsored by TheRealReal or something? (Infinitely better them than SHEIN, I guess.)
- Did Cher and Tai stay friends?
- Did Tai marry that sweet stoner-slash-skateboarder?
- Did said sweet stoner-slash-skateboarder successfully stay off weed after we saw him donate his bong to the Pismo Beach Disaster Relief drive at the end of the original movie?
- For that matter, how will the show handle the Brittany Murphy of it all?
- Will the events of the first Clueless TV show be accepted as canon, or should we just forget that happened since it didn’t actually star Alicia Silverstone?
- Is Donald Faison coming back, and if so, is he contractually allowed to appear in anything at this point without his bestie and Scrubs costar Zach Braff?
- Is Cher a mom?
- I mean, she’s got to at least be a dog mom à la Elle Woods, right?
- Will we ever learn more about Cher’s own mom, who “died of a fluke accident during a routine liposuction”?
- Will Wallace Shawn reprise his role as Mr. Hall? (Please, God, hear my prayer.)
- Do we think Mr. Hall and Miss Geist’s marriage lasted?
- Did Dionne ever have her proposed sailor-dress wedding with all her bridesmaids in little sailor hats?
- Is that actually…sort of a genius wedding theme?
- Will the new show be set in Beverly Hills again, or will they change things up and have Cher live in Highland Park or Venice?
- If you grew up in a mansion in Beverly Hills like Cher, do even the second-and-third-fanciest of LA neighborhoods seem mid to you?
- Will the new Clueless sequel series tackle the climate implications of conspicuous consumption?
- Could Cher perhaps have…lost all her money in the prior or looming recession?
- Would a show about a non-rich Cher Horowitz even work?
- How on earth do Silverstone and Faison still look exactly the same age as they were when they filmed the original movie?
- Should I become a vegan like Silverstone in order to look that good?
- Could I actually live the rest of my life happily without mini pigs in a blanket?
- Do they make vegan pigs in a blanket?
