John Cena is planning to leave WWE after one final run in 2025, and on Sunday night he’ll have a chance to cap off his legendary career by winning the Undisputed WWE Championship from Cody Rhodes in Night 2 of WrestleMania 41.
Cena is currently a 16-time World Champion in WWE, matching Ric Flair’s all-time record – and if Cena’s WrestleMania history is any indicator, he could break that record this weekend.
Let’s take a look back at every match Cena’s had at WWE WrestleMania, starting with his Mania debut in 2004. Cena has a 10-6 record overall in 16 WrestleMania appearances – but three of those losses have come in recent years as Cena transitioned to a part-time schedule. At his peak, Cena was nearly unbeatable at the Showcase of the Immortals.
WrestleMania XX: Cena defeats The Big Show (c) to win the United States Championship
This was Cena’s first championship in WWE, and was the first time the United States Championship was contested at a WrestleMania. He would go on to hold the title for much of 2004, before entering the main event scene at the 2005 Royal Rumble.
WrestleMania 21: Cena defeats John “Bradshaw” Layfield (c) to win the WWE Championship
Cena had to win a No. 1 contender tournament for the right to face JBL, and went on to win his first world title.
WrestleMania 22: Cena (c) defeats Triple H by submission to retain the WWE Championship
This was Cena’s first WrestleMania main event.
WrestleMania 23: Cena (c) defeats Shawn Michaels by submission to retain the WWE Championship
In his second consecutive main event, Cena made one of his grandest entrances.
WrestleMania XXIV: Randy Orton defeats Cena and Triple H to retain the WWE Championship
Cena’s first WrestleMania loss came in the year he made his shock return from injury and won the Royal Rumble at Madison Square Garden.
WrestleMania 25: Cena defeats The Big Show and Edge (c) to win the World Heavyweight Championship
WrestleMania XXVI: Cena defeats Batista (c) by submission to win the WWE Championship
Cena became a nine-time World Champion with this win.
WrestleMania XXVII: The Miz (c) defeats Cena to retain the WWE Championship
A shocking result that set up Cena’s “Once In a Lifetime” match against The Rock. After a double count-out, The Rock – who was “hosting” the event – restarted the match and later hit Cena with a Rock Bottom, allowing The Miz to score the pinfall and keep his title.
WrestleMania XXVIII: The Rock defeats Cena by pinfall
In a stellar match with a ton of near-falls, Cena tried to hit The People’s Elbow on The Rock, only to eat a Rock Bottom and the loss.
WrestleMania 29: John Cena defeats The Rock (c) to win the WWE Championship
Twice in a Lifetime? This match occurred after Cena won the Royal Rumble and The Rock shocked CM Punk, ending his 400+ day reign.
WrestleMania XXX: John Cena defeats Bray Wyatt
WrestleMania 31: Cena defeats Rusev (c) to win the United States Championship
Largely remembered as “the one where Rusev came to the ring on a tank.”
WrestleMania 33: Cena and Nikki Bella defeat The Miz and Maryse
WrestleMania 34: The Undertaker defeats Cena
In a match that happened probably a decade too late, The Undertaker squashed Cena in a match that didn’t even last three minutes.
WrestleMania 36: Bray Wyatt defeats Cena in a “Firefly Fun House” match
WrestleMania 39: Austin Theory (c) defeats Cena to retain the United States Championship
