From Science to Couture: How Drexel's Master's of Fashion Design Opened Doors at Christian Siriano's Atelier

Kyle Bakonyi never expected to find himself constructing couture gowns for A-list clients, but thanks to Drexel University’s Master’s of Fashion Design program, he’s doing just that.

Coming from a science background, Kyle was drawn to Drexel’s program because it welcomes students without prior fashion experience and offers a full foundation in technical skills like draping, pattern-making and couture construction.

“I wanted a program that would give me the skills to fully understand fashion design, not just a certificate in sewing,” Kyle says. “Drexel allowed me to start from scratch at a master’s level.”

That hands-on approach led him to an internship with Christian Siriano, where he played a role in crafting Whoopi Goldberg’s Oscar gown. “If you’d told me three years ago, I’d be working on a gown for the Oscars, I wouldn’t have believed you,” he admits.

Beyond technical training, the program emphasizes sustainability and global exposure. A trip to South Korea allowed Kyle to study production techniques firsthand. More importantly, the experience built his confidence. “I had major imposter syndrome at first, but now I know I belong in this industry,” he says.

As he prepares for his next steps, Kyle is seeking atelier roles in New York and Philadelphia. His advice for career changers?

“Drexel gave me everything I needed to transition into fashion. If you’re serious about the industry, this program can take you there.”
