The Rise and Rise of the Solid Perfume

Move over, sculptural bottles and fragrance oils—solid perfumes are commanding center stage on the shelves, moving from niche status to the forefront of the category over the past year. Once hard to find, these fragrances deliver more intimacy and longevity than the typical mists, allowing for a subtle scent that lasts longer than their liquid peers. And because they’ve become more popular, with Gen Z-minded Glossier and classic houses like Diptyque both offering these wax-based formulas, you can now enjoy more variety than ever.

  • Why We Love It: Noyz takes a supremely portable (but no less elegant) approach to fragrance with a clever twist-up stick, which is small enough to tuck into a clutch and glides onto skin. It’s intended for layering with other perfumes, and this particular scent delivers a skin-like warmth courtesy of cashmere woods, Madagascar vanilla, and cozy amber that meshes especially well with any warm floral or gourmand. The formula also melts into skin, actively nourishing it with squalane and leaving out the typical alcohol.
  • Key Notes: Cassia, black plum, ceylon, cashmere woods, vanilla, amber
  • Size: 7 g

  • Why We Love It: A tribute to mist-filled early mornings, this alcohol-free solid perfume delivers a fresh, woody scent in a sleek compact, which has a comfortable weight in the hand. The formula itself is free of alcohol, and instead uses olea europaea fruit oil, vitamin C, and jojoba seed oil to actively support the skin’s moisture barrier—all while lending the fresh notes of juniper, cypress, and cedarwood—which dry down to a warm, almost smoky blend of amber and leather.
  • Key Notes: Juniper, lemon, cypress, cedarwood, amber, musk
  • Size: 3.6 g

  • Why We Love It: Glossier You’s liquid mist has myriad devotees among the Vogue staff. “I love Glossier You for the way that it mingles with my skin without feeling overpowering,” says fashion writer Hannah Jackson, who considers it her signature scent. And this pocket-sized fragrance captures the same spirit of the scent—a warm, musky floral—in a base of synthetic beeswax; it’s housed in a sculptural compact that you can open with the push of a thumb.
  • Key Notes: Pink pepper, iris, ambrette seeds, ambrox
  • Size: 3 g

  • Why We Love It: Housed in a compact pretty enough to display, this solid perfume—made with a wax base—is a celebration of tuberose, the sweet and sensual white flower that blooms at night. (So does jasmine, yet another note in this fragrance.) They’re paired with orange blossom and a marine accord to call to mind a coastal beach town in Vietnam.
  • Key Notes: Tuberose, jasmine, orange blossom, marine accord
  • Size: 3 g

  • Why We Love It: It’s little surprise that Rihanna’s signature scent, Fenty Eau de Parfum, is a bold one: the spicy, gender-neutral fragrance opens with a fresh burst of magnolia, tangerine, and rose before settling into a seductive musk on the skin. The long-lasting and alcohol-free base is infused with coconut oil and sunflower seed wax that melt into the skin, leaving it gleaming and softly scented.
  • Key Notes: Magnolia, tangerine, rose, musk
  • Size: 0.11 oz.

Dior

Mini Miss Eau de Parfum Solid Perfume

  • Why We Love It: Miss Dior has undergone several iterations since its debut in 1947, the latest pairing the fragrance’s signature floral-heavy scent with new fruit notes. This solid version is similarly lush, infusing a base of rose wax with the signature floral bouquet—think lily, iris, peony, and tons of slightly spice rose—along with vanilla and Tonka bean. The melting texture makes it easy to swipe on pulse points without a greasy or sticky feel, but the standout feature is the case, which resembles a tube of lipstick at first glance.
  • Key Notes: Iris, lily of the valley, peony, rose, musk
  • Size: 3.2 g

  • Why We Love It: Made with a solid oil base—jojoba oil, castor oil, and candelilla wax making up the bulk of ingredients—this perfume stick is a burst of jammy florals, featuring rose absolute, rose oil, lemon oil, and geranium oil. The blend is so sweet that it’s nearly a gourmand, and it melts seamlessly onto skin. (That said, because it melts easily, it’s best kept out of beach bags or away from sunlit areas.)
  • Key Notes: Rose, lemon, geranium
  • Size: 0.3 oz.

Everything You Need to Know

What exactly is a solid perfume?

A solid perfume is a type of fragrance that comes in a wax- or gel-based formula, versus the traditional, alcohol-based liquids found in eau de toilettes and eau de parfums, according to Frank Voelkl, a principal perfumer at dsm-firmenich. “While solid perfumes may adhere better to the skin due to their thicker consistency, their overall longevity is comparable to eau de parfums, depending on the fragrance concentration and type,” he says.

Are solid perfumes better?

Solid perfumes can be better than their liquid counterparts for a few reasons. For one, “solid perfumes offer a more localized application, meaning the scent is concentrated in specific areas rather than dispersed over a wide surface like a spray,” says Voelkl.

Also, because of their waxy or gel-like base, solid perfumes can typically adhere better to skin, which delivers a more consistent fragrance experience, he says. Plus, they have a more gradual evaporation process, which “can make the scent feel more subtle and intimate,” says Voelkl.

Are there disadvantages to wearing solid perfumes?

For one, not all solid perfumes will last longer on the skin than an eau de parfum; that’s because how long they last ultimately depends on the type and concentration of the fragrance. And their scent may not be as apparent, which may or may not be a good thing, “because they don’t disperse over a large area like sprays,” says Voelkl. That may be advantageous in, say, an office setting, and less so when you’re looking to make a statement.

How to apply solid perfume

Voelkl recommends applying solid perfume to the pulse points such as the wrists, neck, and behind the ears, “as body heat helps to diffuse the scent,” he says. “Since the fragrance stays in a concentrated area, consider reapplying throughout the day if you want a more noticeable scent.”

You can also layer your fragrance with matching or complementary fragrance mists to give it more depth and complexity.
