For months, Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was considered a favorite to land with the New York Giants at No. 3 overall in the 2025 NFL draft.
That did not happen.
The Giants selected Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter with their first pick before trading back up into Round 1 where they took Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, effectively ending any lingering speculation about Sanders.
But the Giants weren’t the only team to pass on Deion’s son. All 32 NFL teams did… multiple times.
Through two days and three rounds of the draft, Sanders has not heard his name called. Once projected to be a top 10 pick, the 23-year-old has fallen out of the top 100 and seen other quarterbacks, including Tyler Shough and Dillon Gabriel, have their moment in the sun.
During a Friday night press conference following the third-round selection of Toledo defensive tackle Darius Alexander, general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were asked about Sanders and his slide. Their answers were awkward.
“I’d say we had good meetings with all the guys that came in here on 30 visits. Quarterback meetings were productive, and we’re happy with Jaxson,” Daboll said. “Just to go back on Darius…”
“I’m not going to get into — this is Darius’s press conference and the New York Giants, so we can talk about that if you want, but I don’t want to talk about any other players,” Schoen said.
If that seems cold, it’s for good reason.
The Ringer’s Todd McShay recently revealed that Daboll had a negative experience with Sanders during one of their private pre-draft meetings. It left a bad taste in the mouths of those in the room and explains why the Giants passed on him.
It may also explain why Sanders remains on the board.
“Shedeur didn’t have a great interview with Brian Daboll in a private visit,” McShay said. “An install package came in. Preparation wasn’t there for it. [He] got called out on it. Didn’t like that. Brian didn’t appreciate him not liking it.”
McShay added that two teams drafting inside the top 10 with quarterback needs had meetings with Sanders that “did not go well.” Those personnel sources felt Shedeur “did not care” what they thought of him.
Does this solve the mystery of Sanders’ slide? Maybe not entirely, but it does explain why the Giants went in a different direction.
