The former U.S. first lady previously used the bespoke outfit in January for President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and in 2022 for Queen Elizabeth II’s farewell.

The blazer and skirt set was a statement-maker for traditional somber dress codes. The jacket’s fastening down the center was lined with illuminating flower-shaped buttons as the surrealist hardware featured an organic, triangular gold frame that held pearls encircling sparkling teardrop crystals and a crystal centerpiece.

The educator completed the look with a mantilla, Marion Parke pumps and sunglasses. Meanwhile, former president Joe had on a black suit with a blue tie and Ray-ban sunglasses.

Joe, who identifies as Catholic, shares a relationship with Pope Francis, having met him with Jill during his term as Vice President under Barack Obama in 2015, and they were received by the pontiff in 2021 at the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican during Joe’s turn as President for a conversation on climate change and COVID-19.

Another first lady also chose a mantilla, Melania Trump. The current FLOTUS, who joined President Donald Trump, wore a double-breasted Dolce & Gabbana coat.
Some of the other guests among an estimated crowd of 250,000 people, included Prince William, Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain, King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of Jordan, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron and more.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, died at 88 on April 21. The first Latin American Jesuit Pope, he will be buried in a simple coffin at Santa Maria Maggiore.
