Some people may find an audacious faux fur coat complete with a train to be a bit… extra. But Usher is not one of those people. When he takes Vogue behind the scenes of his Past Present Future tour ahead of a show at London’s O2 Arena, the R&B superstar dons the coat backstage as comfortably as one wears a T-Shirt. “You leave me in the room with the clothes, I’m gonna try everything on,” he says, cracking his signature smile.

For this latest installment of Styling the Tour, Usher is joined by Past Present Future stylists Jan-Michael Quammie and Yashua Simmons. The three discuss everything from the goggles that became Usher’s trademark accessory early in his career (“of course they were Prada,” the singer confirms) to the pieces they were drawn to for the tour.

“I’m very decisive—I’m like boom, boom, boom—and Yashua challenges me a lot to think a little bit deeper and further,” Quammie says about the duo’s dynamic. Simmons adds that their goal was to “marry costume and fashion” for the stage—a vision they realized with a range of bold, heavily textured pieces. One moment Usher is on stage in a custom crystal-embellished tuxedo by Burberry’s Daniel Lee, the next, a pair of Luis De Javier leather pants, each leg a ladder of chunky belts. “I was so obsessed from day one that I had him do two in a different colorway,” Quammie says of the pants. Another standout look? Bejeweled jeans by Ralph Lauren paired with a black faux fur coat—a look Simmons says is “sexy and easy, and feels very rock and roll.”
