Steelers OTA Week One takeaways

Week One of the Pittsburgh Steelers OTAs is in the books. The offseason has been puzzling for the Steelers and their plan doesn’t seem clear, especially on offense. All the attention is on the quarterback position but there are plenty of other position units in flux. After poring over everything coming out of OTAs this week, here are the biggest takeaways and things we will continue to keep an eye on.

QB Will Howard is already showing improvement

The first day of OTAs wasn’t great for rookie quarterback Will Howard as he made the adjustment to the NFL, but by the end of the week, he was already showing improvement and feeling more comfortable in drills. We aren’t on the Howard bandwagon yet but it’s good to see a guy with Howard’s resume stepping up.

WR Roman Wilson is healthy and confident

You have to appreciate all the things second-year wide receiver Roman Wilson is saying a week into OTAs. After missing all of his rookie season, Wilson is healthy, he’s rebuilt his body, and he’s talking like a guy who is ready to take over the league.

LB Cole Holcomb looks like a difference maker

It was awesome to see linebacker Cole Holcomb out there running around and putting coaches on their butts. It really felt like Holcomb might never play again but with him back, the Steelers four-man rotation of inside linebackers might be the best in the NFL.

OT Broderick Jones is taking the position switch seriously

Another player who used the offseason to work on their body and fitness is offensive tackle Broderick Jones. Jones got word he was moving to left tackle and he showed up to OTAs slimmed down and in the best shape of his career. Jones at left tackle and Troy Fautanu at right tackle might be the most significant roster moves of the offseason that isn’t quarterback.

T.J. Watt and DK Metcalf skip workouts for different reasons

We fully expected edge defender T.J. Watt to skip OTAs workouts as he’s working on a new contract. But it was surpsing that wide receiver DK Metcalf didn’t show up. He’s already got his massive contract and as the new No. 1 receiver, you would think he would want every rep he can with his new team and new quarterbacks.
