Patek Philippe Timepiece Leads Christie’s June Watch Auction

Christie’s forthcoming live auction, “Important Watches Featuring Stories in Time: A Collection of Exceptional Watches,” begins June 9 in New York City. The auction continues Christie’s long-held position as a showcase for independent watchmakers, and this auction will feature vintage models and contemporary designs in equal measure.

Leading the forthcoming auction is the Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Minute Repeater. The timepiece has a decades-long history, with an estimated value range between $650,000 and $1.4 million. The watch was introduced in 1989 and dubbed “the world’s most complicated wristwatch at the time,” per Christie’s.

The watch was initially crafted to mark the 150th anniversary of the brand. Of the 160 examples produced by Patek Philippe, only roughly 20 were created with a pink gold tone, according to Christie’s. A majority of the pieces were originally fitted with silvered dials and baton indexes.

The Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Minute Repeater stands out with such elements as a striking slate-gray dial. The timepiece was discontinued in 2000. The piece up for auction is considered “one of the most coveted minute repeating wristwatches of the past three decades,” per Christie’s.

“The timepieces offered in this sale transcend mere beauty, time and trend,” said Rebecca Ross, head of sale at Christie’s in New York City. “They symbolize significant moments in history, from groundbreaking explorations to technical advancements that redefine possibilities.”

We are enthusiastic to offer one of the most important watches ever made in series by Patek Philippe, the impressive Patek Philippe Ref. 3974R in pink gold with specially ordered gray dial and Breguet numerals; signifying rarity, complexity and achievement.”

Other timepieces featured as part of the auction include the Rolex “Rainbow Daytona” timepiece (estimated value between $250,000 and $450,000) and an Audemars Piguet 18-karat gold Calendar Wristwatch with Moon phases (estimated value between $50,000 and $100,000).
