The Washington Commanders entered the 2024 NFL season with very few prime-time games. They were scheduled for one Sunday night game and one Thursday game. That’s expected when you finish 4-13 the year before. Washington’s one Monday night game likely resulted from having Heisman Trophy winner and No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels under center.
In that Monday night game, Daniels looked like the NFL’s next great superstar, leading the Commanders to a shocking road win over the favored Cincinnati Bengals. Daniels outdueled another former Heisman-winning LSU star, Joe Burrow, and his touchdown pass to Terry McLaurin late in the fourth quarter to clinch the win was one of the best throws of the NFL season.
Washington would have its best season in 33 years, going 12-5 and reaching the NFC championship game. Daniels won every Rookie of the Year award, had the NFL’s top-selling jersey, and the Commanders were ratings gold by the end of the season.
So, it was no surprise when the NFL revealed the new schedule last month, the Commanders were heavily featured. Washington has five prime-time games, and three other standalone games, including an international matchup in Madrid, a Saturday game and one on Christmas Day.
It’s safe to say that everyone wants to see Daniels.
What does Daniels think of the increased number of prime-time games?
“I think that mantra still stands [Anybody. Anywhere. Anytime],” Daniels said, referring to one of head coach Dan Quinn’s favorite slogans. “I don’t think we are looking at it as a play Monday night or Sunday night. We are looking at it as we are playing this opponent Sunday, Monday, doesn’t matter if we are playing on Tuesday, Wednesday, we are just going out there playing football.”
Daniels is serious. Do you think he cares if the game is on Sunday at 1 p.m. or on Monday night? For Daniels and his teammates, it’s always about the next game on the schedule, regardless of day or time.
