South Carolina baseball lands in-state RHP Amp Phillips from USC Upstate


COLUMBIA — South Carolina baseball has landed in-state right handed pitcher Amp Phillips via the transfer portal.

Phillips, from Lancaster, South Carolina spent one season with USC Upstate after starting his career at Spartanburg Methodist College. For the Spartans this season, he pitched 84 innings and finished with a 3.64 ERA.

In the NCAA Regionals, he struck out nine batters in the 7-3 loss to Clemson on May 30.

For South Carolina coach Paul Mainieri, this marks his fourth addition to the roster via the portal. As of June 4, he has 14 players who are transferring out of the program.

When USC Upstate faced Clemson on March 4 and lost 7-0, Phillips had a no-hitter, allowing no hits and no runs in the two innings he pitched.

In the 16-0 win over UNC Asheville on May 15, he allowed just one hit and walked one batter in five innings. That game marked the fourth one-hit game for Phillips this season. He allowed no runs in seven difference games and finished with a 7-2 record, with 12 starts and 20 appearances.

In the Big South Tournament on May 22, Phillips struck out five batters and allowed four hits and zero runs in the 7-0 quarterfinal win over Winthrop.

He was named the 2025 Newcomer of the Year for the Big South Conference and was voted part of the Big South All-Tournament team. The Spartans won the Big South Conference Tournament for the first time in program history, earning their first ever NCAA Tournament bid.
