Could Bengals play starters in more than one preseason game?

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Zac Taylor has made it clear there is an emphasis on changing how the team does things this offseason in order to avoid one of those now-infamous slow starts.

Taylor got the ball rolling on this by changing up how intense the practices are, even at voluntaries. And when the Bengals announced the training camp schedule, it was revealed that Taylor even adjusted the timing of practices this summer.

So what about preseason games?

Taylor told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com that starters could play more than just one preseason game this summer and fall:

“That’s definitely on the table. Having been through this 14 years now really it can change every training camp. “Certain games change depending on health and on decisions we want to make. I don’t mind putting that out there in the world that we’re considering playing these guys in two or three of the games, but that’s always subject to change based on injuries.”

Traditionally, it used to be that starters would play a drive or two in the third preseason game (or final one, once the number of exhibitions was reduced).

But now, it sounds like guys like Joe Burrow and beyond could see the field for drives over multiple preseason games.

Most likely, this sort of work will go to a young, rebuilding defense under a new coordinator. Either way, it makes the preseason slate just a little more interesting than usual in Cincinnati this year.
