Train Robbers road woes continue, but delight Father's Day home fans with rout of Dublin

The Bakersfield Train Robbers went 1-2 on a short three-game road trip, playing three different opponents before returning home on Sunday for Father’s Day. The team treated those in attendance at Sam Lynn Ballpark with a 19-1 drubbing of the Dublin (Calif.) Leprechauns.

Bakersfield, after a 7-6 loss at Dublin last Thursday, went to San Rafael and lost 13-1 on Friday. The team came back and got a 10-8 at Monterey on Saturday.

The Sunday victory over Dublin improved the Train Robbers’ season record to 12-9.

Friday’s blowout loss to San Rafael saw the Train Robbers offense collect only four hits off pitcher Alex Valasek. Bakersfield’s lone run came in the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly by Emilio Luna. Valasek threw a complete game — pitched 8 and two-thirds innings — with 12 strikeouts and five walks. Valasek also helped himself in the game with a three-run double.

In the final road game of this past weekend’s trip, the Train Robbers scored five runs combined in the first two innings, but Monterey tied it at 5 in the sixth inning and led 8-5 going into the eighth inning.

Bakersfield scored five runs for an offense led by Joe Riddle’s three RBI and two from Tyler McKenna. The Train Robbers used five pitchers, but Dillon Stimpson and Jared Gay each pitched a scoreless inning late to give Bakersfield the victory and get that elusive road win.

The Train Robbers came home and started a three-game homestand, all against Dublin, on Sunday. So far, so good.

It was 8-0 after three innings and 13-0 after six. Dublin scored its run in the seventh, but Bakersfield scored another six runs in the eighth.

It was a big night for Riddle, who drove in seven runs with a home run, a double and a sacrifice fly as well as a pair of singles on a 4-for-4 night. His seven RBI gives him 32 for the season heading into Monday’s home against Dublin.

Other offensive standouts were Jared Gay who homered, and Luna, who drove in four runs. Kyle Langston pitched 7 and one-third innings to pick up the victory.

The teams play again in Pecos League action on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
