EVANSVILLE — The 2024-25 school year was another successful season in high school athletics for Southwestern Indiana.
A handful of individuals and teams won state championships, plus several more finished runner-up. The number of talented athletes in the area would be too many list. This is where you come in. Who was your vote for the Courier & Press male high school athlete of the year?
Multi-sport athletes were given stronger consideration but not a requirement. Vote as often as you’d like until 10 a.m. CT on Friday. The story will be updated with the winner, but no physical award will be given. This is pure bragging rights.

Below is more info on each nominee determined, in alphabetical order:
Peyton Blackard, Gibson Southern: The senior was the sectional and regional champion in golf – finished tied for second at the state championship. All-State.
Ty Brown, South Spencer: The senior was an All-State defensive back/quarterback with 1,979 offensive yards and 31 total touchdowns, plus six interceptions on defense in football. All-PAC shortstop and IHSBCA All-Star in baseball.
Will Coleman, Castle: The senior was one of the top pitchers in the state with a 1.30 ERA and 103 strikeouts for the SIAC champions. IHSBCA All-Star.
Luke Ellspermann, Memorial: The senior was an All-State wide receiver with 1,113 yards and 17 touchdowns in football. The SIAC Player of the Year with 19.6 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists in basketball for the sectional champions. A starting centerfielder in baseball.
Matthew Fisher, Memorial: The senior was an All-State quarterback and SIAC Player of the Year with 2,779 yards and 34 touchdowns in football. One of the top pitchers in Indiana (0.76 ERA and 61 strikeouts) and projected top-round draft pick in baseball. IHSBCA All-Star.
Jed Galvin, North Posey: The senior was an All-State running back with 1,563 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns in football. All-PAC outfielder with a .378 average and six home runs in baseball.
Jett Goldsberry, Heritage Hills: The junior was an All-State quarterback with 1,807 passing yards, 1,676 rushing yards and 54 total touchdowns for the state champions. The sectional and regional champion at 215 pounds in wrestling – finished eighth at the state championship.
Cohen Havill, Memorial: The junior was an All-State forward and SIAC Player of the Year in soccer with 28 goals and 10 assists for the state champions.
Edwin Holmes, Princeton: The junior was an All-State forward with 16.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists in basketball for the regional champions. Indiana Junior All-Star.
De’Amontey Layne, North: The junior was the sectional and regional champion in the 200 and 4×100 relay in track – finished ninth in the 200 at the state championship. Had 26 tackles and two intereptions in football.
Jackson Nolan, Reitz: The senior was the sectional and regional champion in cross country – finished 10th at the state championship. The sectional and regional champion in the 3,200 in track & field – earned third at the state finals.
Isaiah Schaefer, Mater Dei: The senior was the sectional, regional and state champion at 138 pounds – the 35th individual state champion in program history.
Caleb Schnarr, Jasper: The senior was the IHSAA state champion in doubles with Eli Flick in the fall. An All-State golfer and the individual sectional champion – finished tied for ninth at state and SIAC Player of the Year. The Mental Attitude Award winner for tennis.
Shane Sims, Harrison: The senior was an All-State guard with 19.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists in basketball for the sectional champions.
Alex Smith, Heritage Hills: The senior finished eighth in the state championship at 150 pounds in wrestling (sectional and regional champion, undefeated until the semistate). Had 86 tackles and four interceptions in football for the state champions.
Landon Terry, Tell City: The senior was a state qualifier in two sports: finished sixth at 175 pounds in wrestling and 35th in the 100 in track. Earned three sectional titles between both wrestling and track. Also a starting running back in football.
