In the last 24 hours, the Boston Celtics have been very busy reshaping their roster, making major trades to get the team under the second apron and out of the penalties and crushing tax bill that status gad Boston poised to take on. But even after having done that by trading away title core players like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, rumbles are starting to percolate up that the Celtics are still trying to make significant trades.
In this case, the hoped-for move would be into the 2025 NBA draft lottery, with Heavy Dot Com senior journalist and former Boston beat writer Steve Bulpett reporting that the Cs “are said to be trying to make a trade to move up in the draft, with particular interest in projected lottery pick Kasparas Jakucionis, a 6-foot-6 point guard from Illinois.”
Whether the specific draft target is a smoke screen designed to throw opposing ball clubs off the scent of Boston’s desired target or not, Jakucionis is an intriguing floor general standing at 6-foot-6 who logged 15 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists with Illinois in his sole season with the NCAA team.
“It remains to be seen whether Boston can get up where they’d need to be to draft him, but there are definitely teams up high that are looking to trade back,” shared one unnamed front office source to Bulpett.
Could this involve trading away the recently acquired Anfernee Simons with some or all of Boston’s 2025 draft capital at Nos. 28 and 32? Perhaps the team-friendly contract of reserve guard Sam Hauser? Future assets, or a combo of these options?
For now, all we can do is wait — but with the draft set to kick off in roughly 24 hours, it shouldn’t be long until we know.
