The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) is redefining what it means to study jewelry design. As the largest and most comprehensive STEM-designated jewelry program in North America, SCAD blends time-honored craftsmanship with leading edge innovation. Students prototype, cast, engrave, and design in both physical and digital realms, working in SCAD’s Fahm Hall, a 13,800-square-foot studio space outfitted with the newest jewelry design technology including laser welders, milling machines, arc welding systems, and Rhino-certified CAD software.

“We are proud to lead the largest and most forward-thinking jewelry program in the United States,” says SCAD chair of jewelry Jay Song. “Our mission is to prepare students for successful, meaningful careers while nurturing their unique artistic voices and creative visions.”

The professional edge of SCAD’s jewelry program is evident in the success of its graduates, such as 2025 B.F.A. Jewelry graduate Olivia Tanzy, who will head to Atlanta this fall to join Ringcrush as a designer; and newly minted M.A. jewelry graduate Sonia (Shuang) Yang, who has joined Kate Spade team in New York. “Becoming part of the hardware design team at Kate Spade is an exciting moment, and I’m grateful that SCAD prepared me to work for such a well-established brand in a competitive industry,” Yang says.

SCAD has hosted some of the most influential names in jewelry, including Taffin founder James de Givenchy, John Hardy creative chairman Reed Krakoff, and Sotheby’s Jewelry vice chairman Frank Everett, creating exclusive learning and employment opportunities for its students. None other than David and Sybil Yurman donated $1.3 million in gemstones to the SCAD jewelry department for students to implement into their work.

Each year, the program hosts the SCAD Jewelry Trunk Show, a two-day public event that has become a signature event for the university. In 2025, the show featured over 75 student and alumni designers and nearly 1,000 jewelry pieces, generating $70,000 in sales. SCAD jewelry students are consistently recognized with top industry honors, including the Fashion Scholarship Fund, International Design Awards, and CFDA Awards. With an eye on both artistry and innovation, SCAD’s jewelry design program is helping to shape the future of fine jewelry one career-ready designer at a time.
