Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider made some changes to the struggling offensive line this offseason. Most notably, first-round pick Grey Zabel is the new starter at left guard. Elsewhere, Schneider is banking on growth from in-house solutions like Christian Haynes, Olu Oluwatimi, and Abe Lucas. It’s a risky bet considering how poor the collective was last season.
The Athletic recently posed a question for all 32 teams in the league heading into training camp. For the Seahawks, it’s no surprise that local reporter Michael-Shawn Dugar highlighted the offensive line.
“The answer to this question will define the season,” Dugar wrote about the offensive line. “The Seahawks have talented skill players on offense and they’re returning nearly every starter from a defense that was a top-10 unit in 2024. Sam Darnold demonstrated he can be a competent quarterback when his supporting cast is strong. Is a potential lineup of Charles Cross, Grey Zabel, Olu Oluwatimi, Anthony Bradford and Abe Lucas enough to qualify as strong? (Zabel, a rookie, is the only new player in that lineup.) New offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and his front line hold the keys to the Seahawks’ season.”
Offensive line coach John Benton is being tasked with developing young blockers who struggled last season. The Seahawks need some combination of Haynes, Oluwatimi, Anthony Bradford, and Jalen Sundell to be better than they were a year ago. As Dugar notes, Seattle’s new-look offensive line will dictate the 2025 season.
