Josh Reynolds “most surprising” player of Jets offseason

The New York Jets signed veteran free-agent wide receiver Josh Reynolds to a one-year contract worth $2.75 million earlier this offseason. Throughout OTAs and minicamp, it became quickly noticeable that Reynolds was the Jets’ second best receiver behind Garrett Wilson. All signs indicate he’ll be the WR2 this season.

The Jets have an inexperienced room. Arian Smith is a rookie and Malachi Corley is a sophomore who disappointed as a first-year player in 2024. Reynolds is a proven veteran, and he’ll be counted on to be a reliable weapon for starting quarterback Justin Fields.

ESPN recently compiled a list of every team’s “most surprising” player this offseason. Unsurprisingly for the Jets, Reynolds was local reporter Rich Cimini’s choice.

After a strong offseason, Reynolds is the clear-cut leader for the WR2 job,” Cimini wrote. “He arrived with little fanfare as a free agent (one year, $2.8 million), mainly because of a down 2024 with the Broncos and Jaguars. It also was a turbulent year; he suffered arm and head wounds in a shooting. New Jets coach Aaron Glenn knows Reynolds from their time in Detroit, where the 30-year-old receiver was a solid complementary option. Beyond Garrett Wilson, the Jets lack big-play ability after cutting Davante Adams. Reynolds has separated from Allen Lazard and others.”

Coach Glenn’s familiarity with Reynolds undeniably played a role in Darren Mougey’s decision to sign the experienced pass catcher. Reynolds spent two-and-a-half seasons alongside Glenn in Detroit. He was impactful, recording 78 receptions across 2022-2023 for 1,087 yards and eight touchdowns.
