Shai Gilgeous-Alexander wins ESPY Best Male Athlete of the Year award

The awards keep coming. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has collected about every possible accolade this past season. He might need to get another trophy case as he added a couple more at an annual sports award show.

Gilgeous-Alexander was named the ESPY Award winner for 2025 Male Athlete of the Year. The other nominees were Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley and Shohei Ohtani.

It shouldn’t be a shocker to see Gilgeous-Alexander win the award. He’s fresh off one of the greatest individual seasons ever. And was the face of the most dominant teams in NBA history with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Gilgeous-Alexander won the MVP award, Conference Finals MVP award and NBA Finals trophy. He also won the scoring title as he had his third straight 30-plus point campaign. On top of all that, he led the Thunder to their first championship.

What Gilgeous-Alexander accomplished in the 2024-25 season has turned him into a household name. He’s one of the greatest players ever and could be on his way to all-time conversations with legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

During his award speech, Gilgeous-Alexander shouted out his personal circle along with the Thunder. Several of his teammates were in attendance. They were nominated for the Best Team of the Year award but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I want to thank the Thunder organization for allowing me to be me,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “… I want to thank my teammates. Best basketball team in the world.”

After signing a supermax extension along with Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren, don’t expect the Thunder to slow down any time soon. They enter next season with solid chances to be a rare repeat champion.
