A former fan favorite in Dallas has run into some trouble that will certainly not help him as he continues working toward his breakthrough moment on the NFL stage.
Offensive lineman Isaac Alarcón has been suspended six games without pay for a violation of the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. Alarcón has been with the San Francisco 49ers since early 2024 but served last season on their practice squad. He has yet to appear in an official game.
The 26-year-old native of Monterrey, Mexico spent four years with the Cowboys beginning in 2020. As part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, he remained with the team as a developmental project but did not take up an official roster spot.
Despite being a benchwarmer on a team packed with superstars, Alarcón did gain a small bit of individual fame during the HBO series Hard Knocks, which followed the Cowboys through training camp in the summer of 2021. The 6-foot-7-inch hopeful’s story and his football journey from south of the border made for compelling television, but his big highlight came when cameras caught him coveting a taste of the birthday cake presented on the practice field to quarterback Dak Prescott.
Alarcón’s roster exemption (and guaranteed spot on the Dallas practice squad) ended after the 2022 season. The Cowboys kept him in 2023 but moved him from offensive line to the other side of the ball, training him as a defensive tackle under Dan Quinn. He appeared in three preseason contests but was released prior to the start of the season.
The 49ers took him on following the 2023 season and moved him back to the offensive line. Alarcón will be allowed to participate in the team’s offseason program, attend training camp, and appear in preseason games. His six-game suspension will go into effect with the start of the 2025 regular season… provided he makes the 53-man roster.
