Micah Parsons requests trade from Dallas Cowboys

Micah Parsons silent no more on contract battle

The line has been drawn in an NFL contract dispute for one of the most notable former Penn State players in the league, edge rusher Micah Parsons. Seemingly having played the good soldier long enough while getting nowhere with a contract extension with the Dallas Cowboys, Parsons has issued a statement saying he no longer wants to be a member of the team, and he has officially submitted a request to be traded to a new team.

“I have made a tough decision, I no longer want to play for the Dallas Cowboys,” Parsons said at the end of a lengthy statement issued on social media on Friday. “My trade request has been submitted to Stephen Jones personally.”

Parsons went into detail with his side of the story of his ongoing contract situation with the Cowboys, which has spanned a couple of years with offseason negotiations going nowhere in hopes of securing a long-term deal. Recent comments made by Cowboys front office officials, namely Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones, have suggested the team was not willing to budge on their numbers at this point.

In his statement, Parsons took aim at some of the more awkward comments made by the Jones family that pointed out injuries and various narratives he did not agree with. In Parsons’ words, he believes he was silent long enough about the situation. Parsons had made it a point to show up to offseason workouts and show he is a leader that could be counted on in hopes of proving his value to the team, but he has had enough of playing that game.

And now things get really interesting for Parsons and his NFL future.

Parsons could be the next highest-paid defensive player in the NFL when he does eventually sign a new contract. Which team gets that opportunity first remains to be seen, as the Cowboys will be able to land quite a haul for the premier pass rusher in the NFL even with diminished bargaining power on their side.

A return home to Pennsylvania may not be in the cards for Parsons, a Harrisburg native, although there are surely Steelers and Eagles fans who would love to see it. The Steelers just locked in an extension with T.J. Watt for three years and $123 million. It would be quite a defensive combo, but the Steelers are unlikely to be a team that will splurge for another top-tier defensive force in this situation. The Eagles, the defending Super Bowl champions, would be incredibly scary if Parsons were added to the mix, but how much would they be willing to give a division rival for him? Of course, nobody should ever doubt the tactics of general manager Howie Roseman.

There are some good landing spots that make the most sense for Parsons, and there is still always a chance that cooler heads do eventually come together and Parsons remains in Dallas for years to come. But Parsons trade watch is officially underway this training camp season.
