Shane Steichen on growth of TE Will Mallory

After Thursday’s practice, Shane Steichen weighed in on what he’s seen from Colts’ tight end Will Mallory.

During the Indianapolis Colts’ Thursday night practice under the lights, tight end Will Mallory was one of the standout performers, hauling in several receptions from both Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones in that practice alone.

However, outside of that one showing, head coach Shane Steichen is pleased with the growth he’s seen from Mallory throughout the offseason and into training camp.

“Obviously, he’s a guy that when we saw him coming out of college a couple years ago, good route runner, good hands, and then to see it progress over the last couple of years,” Steichen said of Mallory after Thursday’s practice.

“Then going into this training camp, he’s got a really good feel, a good knack, certain routes we put him on, but he’s made some tight window catches in training camp so far, and you need to make tight window catches in this league, and I think he’s done a nice job of that.”

These training camp performances from Mallory come on the heels of him seeing his share of opportunities during OTAs and minicamp as well–reps that he was also able to take advantage of.

A fifth-round pick by the Colts in 2023, Mallory’s playing time in his first two NFL seasons has been minimal. This includes playing just 93 offensive snaps in 2024 and totaling just eight targets, per PFF.

Where he fits within this Colts’ 2025 tight end room is in filling the pass-catching specific role. Tyler Warren brings a do-it-all presence to the position, while Mo Alie-Cox and Drew Ogletree have been block-first options at the position.

Warren will be featured heavily right away, but we are going to see plenty of two tight end sets. In those instances when it’s a more run-heavy down, Alie-Cox or Ogletree could be paired with Warren. But when the Colts want an added pass-catching presence, perhaps we see Mallory in those situations.

Along with Mallory, Jelani Woods can fill that role as well. Presumably, the two are competing for that roster spot on the 53-man.
