Jerry Jones says nothing stopping Micah Parsons talks but emphasizes respect for contract

Jerry Jones says “nothing” is stopping contract talks with Micah Parsons but emphasized the Cowboys star is under contract and there’s no rush to finalize an extension.

Jerry Jones did not give much away about where things stand with Micah Parsons’ contract, but what he did emphasize spoke volumes. When asked if talks might pick up now that Dallas Cowboys training camp is coming to a close, Jones responded, “I don’t know that necessarily talks will, but we’ve got a game coming and he’s under contract.”

Pressed on whether there is a deadline to determine if Parsons will play Week 1, Jones stayed on message. “No, not at all. You don’t have deadlines when you’re playing under a contract.”

Jones also said “nothing” is preventing the Cowboys from negotiating with Parsons right now. But despite that, the focus on Parsons being “under contract” feels like more than just a casual reminder. It hints at a deliberate stance from Jones and the Cowboys: they are not in a rush to lock in a record-breaking deal when they already have control over Parsons’ future.

Parsons, one of the NFL’s most dominant defenders since his 2021 debut, is in the fifth-year option of his rookie contract. The Cowboys picked up his $20+ million option for 2025 (the NFL and NFLPA disagree on the exact amount), and they still hold the option to use the franchise tag in both 2026 and 2027. That could mean three more full seasons before a long-term agreement becomes unavoidable.

Parsons is in line to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in league history. Jones’ comments suggest the Cowboys are perfectly comfortable waiting a while before making that happen. The team has used the tag as leverage before, most notably with Dak Prescott and DeMarcus Lawrence, to either buy more time or see if a player’s performance justifies the long-term commitment.

For now, Parsons remains active in camp, which Jones called “important for him” as he takes in coaching and builds chemistry with his teammates. But Jones’ bottom line is hard to miss: “I have a lot of respect for a contract,” and the Cowboys are not feeling the pressure to change it early.
