The Most Comfortable Jeans on the Market, According to Vogue Editors

You can’t deny the cozy allure of pull-on trousers and black leggings, but how about a happy medium? Our editors have found theirs in the most comfortable jeans—pants that are both practical and polished. Gone are the days when jeans may be shrugged off as too casual; in fact, our fashion editors regularly sport them around the Vogue offices. After all, what beats a classic outfit completed by an effortlessly cool pair of jeans? And because fashion editors are notorious for having large denim collections, we asked a handful of our stylish colleagues to share their favorite ones. More specifically, the most comfortable jeans in their wardrobes.

Vogue Editors’ Favorite Jeans:

Purists on the team gravitate toward non-stretch cotton, however, if rigid denim isn’t your speed, there are plenty of other options in softer and thinner fabric, that don’t cross into stretch territory. From fashion editor Mai Morsch’s favorite vintage-inspired Levi’s to Vogue.com editor Chloe Malle’s go-to cropped style, and associate shopping director Talia Abbas’s favorite petite-friendly pairs, discover all our hero pairs, below.

The Full-Pipe tapered jeans

“I’m 5’2 and these jeans required no alterations. Because they’re a barrel-leg, they are as comfortable as a wide-leg but not as overwhelming on my petite frame.” —Libby Page, executive shopping director

Madeline Fass, associate director, fashion

“I’ve had these Tove jeans for a few seasons now and they are the perfect pant. Mid-rise is much more comfortable (and flattering) on me than a high-rise. Feeling good in a pair attributes to their comfortability in my opinion! They’re lightweight and soft, loose throughout the leg all while maintaining that classic straight leg look. The Alexa Chung Madewell jeans have similar appeal. These are not rigid in the slightest, and get softer and more relaxed with every wear.”

Talia Abbas, associate director, shopping

“I’ll admit I haven’t worn jeans (let alone pants with zippers and belt loops) in months but I recently tried on about a dozen pairs for our petite denim guide and these were my two standouts. Both sit lower on the hips which I find less restrictive and easier to style, and mostly importantly, the hems skim the floor without ever touching it. For a tapered fit that looks refreshingly modern, I like Citizens of Humanity’s Winslow. For something wider and more relaxed, Agolde’s Arc is my platonic ideal. Both washes feel right for year-round wear. I wear my true size in both and would recommend the same.”

“I saw my colleague Daisy Shaw-Ellis wearing a pair of fabulous jeans and they were Ulla Johnson, this inspired me to get the same. I love the dark rigid wash and slight kick flare, a perfect crisp fall uniform staple.”

“I love my Levi’s 501 ’90s white jeans so much so that I own them in three washes! They fit like my favorite vintage pairs and are comfortable for all day wear. I recommend sizing up a size or two so they sit low on the hips!”

“This summer, I have been living in one pair of jeans: My BLK DNM flared light-wash blue jeans. They have just the right amount of flare for that 1970s vibe without looking costume-y. I also find them extremely comfortable and stretchy, although, I am also the weird person that wears jeans on a flight—I always find jeans comfy.”

“I picked up a pair of Kallmeyer jeans very similar to these at their recent sample sale and they are such a dream. I’ve been in the market for a pair of indigo jeans for a while and these are the perfect wash. The denim is stiff but not uncomfortable, and they work just as well with heels as they do with flats. I’m tempted to buy a pair in every color…” —

“Every time I wear The Tanner bleach jean from The Frankie Shop, someone inevitably stops me to ask where they’re from. With their exaggerated oversized fit, subtle distressing, and perfectly lived-in wash, they bring an effortlessly cool element to any look. They’re my go-to on days I want to feel both comfortable and chic, and I love pairing them with a more feminine or tailored top to contrast against the laid-back bagginess.”

Elly Leavitt, lifestyle commerce editor

“I’ve tried many (many) jeans in pursuit of the perfect tall inseam—AYR’s straight leg pair are my current favorite. Not only can you choose between three lengths, but the fit is also a dream: it’s loose at the leg, fitted at the hip, and basically my platonic ideal of denim.” —Elly Leavitt, lifestyle commerce editor

“Because I’m expecting my first baby, I know I’m only going to get bigger from here until January! I need oversized, comfortable things that grow with my belly. The drop crotch makes these the perfect maternity option.”

“Currently at the top of the list of my seemingly never ending denim collection is Reformation’s Cary high-rise slouchy wide-leg jean! A recent discovery, this silhouette adds inches to the legs that one could only dream of.”

“I’m not really on the internet, but someone said “ok jeans” to me while I was wearing these, and I’m pretty sure that’s a compliment! These jeans are comfortable, cool, and somehow manage to feel both laid-back and put-together. They’ve quickly become my favorite pair!”

“I usually steer clear from baggy jeans as I tend to think most styles look silly on me (I’m short!) but these adjustable jeans have been an absolute game changer. I cuff them at the bottom to give them a little more shape, but the low-slung baggy silhouette somehow looks incredible chic while making you feel like you are just wearing sweatpants. They are so comfortable I would even go as far as to wear them on a plane!”

Laia Garcia-Furtado, senior fashion news editor

“These are the jeans I always wanted as a teen and never got to have so now I do. What’s crazy is I think the wide leg also makes them dressy, so depending on which shirt I wear them with, sometimes the vibe is more of a trouser than a jean. (Size up for perfect slouch.)”

Naomi Elizée, fashion market director

“I’ve been on the hunt (arguably my whole life?) for the perfect pair of jeans. The perfect pair of jeans to me are one’s that are long but not too long where they are dragging, baggy fit, medium-wash and fit right or below the waist. This pair from SPRWMN was a recent find and I now find myself reaching for them every time I want to wear jeans. Matter of fact, I’m wearing them as I type this!”

Lemon Twist wide leg jeans

“I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect pair of wide-leg jeans forever, and the second I spotted Mother’s wide-leg jean, it was game over. That little twisted detail? Chef’s kiss.

“There’s nothing I love more than a high rise pair of flare jeans; they fit snug around my waist and thighs, and have a looser leg, which is quite flattering on my body. I can wear them in every season with any pair of shoes, and they never seem to lose their fit. Plus, they’re uber-comfortable!”

Rose Carlisle, manager, special events

“I swore I was a low-rise, baggy-jeans-for-life kind of girl— basically sweatpants in denim form. But the DL1961 girls swore the high-rise skinny-straight was back, and I (very hesitantly) gave in. Flashbacks to my high school high-rise era had me bracing for discomfort… but alas, I was wrong. These mold to you just right, structured, flattering, actually comfy, dare I say, I’m bringing the high-rise straight back.”

Daisy Shaw-Ellis, jewelry director

Levi’s

501 Original cropped jeans

“I find myself reaching for this pair of cropped 501s on the weekend more often than not. They hit in all the right places and are a straight cut that don’t hug the legs (they’re also not baggy). The best part is the cropped length for my average height.”

Alexandra Ditch, associate commerce producer

“The Agolde Low Curve jeans are my go-to for casual days. They’re the perfect combination of baggy and slightly cropped. They’re comfortable, yet they don’t swallow my 5’3 frame.”

Lea Donenberg, associate producer, video

“These jeans have been the base of many a summer outfit, and I have no doubt they will carry me through the fall season. They cast a flattering shape against a pointed toe heel or a strappy sandal, and are extremely lightweight and breathable. Bonus – they come in petite! 5’1’’ girlies, rejoice!”

Molly Barstein, associate manager, audience development

“I’ve gone through a serious rotation of baggy low-rise jeans, but the Khy Classic Low Rise Denim tops them all. They strike the perfect balance between relaxed and flattering, and their size range truly feels inclusive. These are the jeans you put on once and immediately wonder how you ever wore anything else. They’ve officially become my everyday go-to.”

Taylor Lashley, social media manager

“There’s a reason Still Here named this pair the Everyday Jean. I’ve been a fan of denim from Still Here for a while but what they did with the Everyday Jean is next level. The classic blue wash is my favorite (they can take you from day to night) and is easily the perfect would-wear-everyday-if-I-could closet staple. They’re a mid-rise style with a slightly relaxed, straight-leg fit that comes with a 32” inseam, which means they’re also tall-girl friendly.”

Sam Ravin, community manager, Vogue app

“The Agolde Low Slung baggy jeans are the ideal vintage-wash pair, super loose but somehow still flattering on my 5’ frame. They nail the chic-but-effortless look perfectly with a wide cuff on the bottom and flip-flops or ballet flats peeking out.”

Irene Kim, production and editorial associate

“My friend and former colleague Liana Satenstein only wore these jeans while she was pregnant (but let’s be clear these are not maternity jeans). They were so cute on her so I ended up getting a pair as well. They sit extremely low rise so beware that these will need to be paired with a longer shirt for the office, but the drawstring toggle on the belt loops make the jeans waistband slightly adjustable pending your needs. When you put them on they fit like sweatpants and by the last two days of New York Fashion Week I was only wearing these jeans!”
