Analyzing the Chargers’ loss to the Rams in preseason Week 2

The Chargers fell short to the Rams on Saturday in Week 2 of the preseason.

Here is our recap and takeaways from the Bolts’ 23-22 loss.

It was over when…

Quarterback Stetson Bennett and the Rams offense marched down the field with over 90 seconds left. Bennett found wide receiver Tru Edwards for an eight-yard touchdown to complete the comeback.

3 stars of the game

  1. WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith: 2 catches, 66 yards
  2. WR Tre Harris: 6 receptions, 85 yards
  3. WR Luke Grimm: Punt return touchdown

Quick takes

  • The Chargers played some starters, including quarterback Justin Herbert, for the opening series. Herbert completed 2 of 5 passes for 46 yards, including a 29-yard pass to wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith.
  • One of Herbert’s incompletions was a perfectly placed ball to wide receiver Quentin Johnston down the right sideline, near the end zone. Unfortunately, Johnston got hit high and suffered what was deemed a concussion.
  • It was the rookie wide receiver show for the Bolts. Second-round pick Tre Harris, who wasn’t much of a factor up to this point, flashed his true potential and led all wideouts with six catches for 85 yards.
  • KeAndre Lambert-Smith, the fifth-round pick, continued to showcase his big-play ability, making a phenomenal catch in tight coverage for a 37-yard gain.
  • Undrafted rookie Luke Grimm returned a punt for a 66-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Grimm missed the early part of training camp with an undisclosed injury.
  • Trey Lance has all but locked up the backup quarterback role to Herbert. Lance finished with 7 of 15 passes for 127 yards. He also led the team in rushing with four carries for 25 yards. Lance has consistently been more in control of the offense compared to Taylor Heinicke.
  • The running backs took a backseat in this game. Kimani Vidal averaged 1.6 yards per carry, while Raheim Sanders had 11 yards on five carries. First-round Omarion Hampton only had two rushes, which he turned into 12 yards.
  • Cornerback Benjamin St-Juste was a player who needed to have a good performance as he fights for a spot on the backend of the positional room. St-Juste allowed a touchdown to Rams wide receiver Konata Mumpfield in the first quarter.
  • Meanwhile, Nikko Reed continued to show he belongs on the 53-man roster. Reed was solid in coverage and had a pass breakup.
  • Safeties RJ Mickens and Tony Jefferson made a few plays on the football, finishing with two and one passes defended, respectively.
  • Defensive tackle TeRah Edwards had the best defensive play of the game. Edwards, the 6-foot-2 and 305-pounder, intercepted a pass and returned it for 29 yards in the fourth quarter.

What’s next?

The Chargers close out the preseason on the road against the 49ers next Saturday, Aug. 23, at 5:30 pm PT.
