Suki Waterhouse Makes the Case for a New Summer Sneaker

Suki Waterhouse dresses as if she leads a double life, which, in some ways, she does. While the model-turned-musician’s professional wardrobe is a kaleidoscope of antique boho-isms—all shaggy Charlotte Simone coats, a flea market’s worth of flared jeans, and slouchy Chloé boots—her everyday wardrobe is, well, not. Take, for example, yesterday’s image of Waterhouse strolling through Manhattan with Robert Pattinson, in which she’s wearing an Isabel Marant shirt layered over a Madewell tank top with Levi’s 501s. She looked like any other 33-year-old in this corner of New York.

Notable, too, is that the look is anchored to nothing more attention seeking than a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 sneakers, a shoe that has proliferated this magazine’s street style galleries just as much as the streets they have documented. (See: Peckham’s car boot sale, Columbia Road’s flower market, even the Sloaniest stretch of W6 that last week hosted the annual Boat Race.) First thrust into pop culture on Uma Thurman’s feet in Kill Bill—before enduring a fleeting moment of derision, when TMZ declared them Prince William’s “sensible walking shoes” in 2012—the Mexico 66s have now reemerged as the latest example of sneakers trending slimmer and streamlined and subtle.

Though, I for one, have yet to embrace this shift, these low-slung kicks—much like EmRata’s rotation of box-fresh Puma Speedcats and Harry Styles’s worn-in Dries Van Notens—have gradually supplanted the once-ubiquitous dad sneaker. “I recently bought two pairs,” wrote self-professed sneakerhead Lily Allen of the equally nimble Miu Miu X New Balance runners in British Vogue’s December issue. “They look delicate next to the JD Sports treasures that I recently pulled out of my storage unit… but they’re very much still about freedom, which is what sneakers have always symbolised to me.” And isn’t that, in essence, what Waterhouse’s boho enthusiasms are all about?
