The best viral products are those that can be worn beyond the fleeting moment they may have in the spotlight. Uniqlo’s windproof blouson, a jacket that Vogue lauded back in May, is one such example. The retailer’s recently-released Barrel jeans are another.
More on the latter: the unisex silhouette leans into the popular baggy jeans styles that have proliferated heavily among the street-style set and content creators over recent years. The jeans feature a high waistband and a slight curve in the leg (hence the name) that subtly echoes the trending “horseshoe” shape of recent seasons–and like any good loose-fitting denim, the hemlines puddle perfectly around the ankle.
Those familiar with the retailer will know already of its alteration service which, at 5’1, I can attest is ideal when shopping for jeans and trousers. Originally available exclusively in store, it’s a solution that has since expanded online–customers can now request tweaks to the length of jeans, ranging from 16 inches to 33 inches, outside of the standard 29, 31 and 33-inch options. A visible stitch is free for items $19.90 and above (the Barrel jeans are $49.90, so you can tailor to your heart’s content), while cut-off and chain stitching services are listed as “coming soon” and a blind stitch can be requested in store for $5.
Much like Uniqlo’s other viral products, the Barrel jeans have already garnered a cult following on social feeds–and in the Vogue offices, multiple editors have already invested in them. If you feel inclined to welcome the Barrel jeans into your wardrobe for the long term, see below for all the current available washes.
