Bucs opt for depth at running back by keeping four on the roster

As the Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced their final 53-man roster, one standout decision was the inclusion of four running backs, signaling a commitment to depth and versatility in their backfield.

The quartet expected to make the cut includes Bucky Irving, Rachaad White, Sean Tucker, and undrafted free agent Josh Williams. While such depth isn’t unheard of, it underscores Tampa’s intent to prepare for all phases of the ground game.In past seasons, the Bucs leaned on a two- or three-man rotation. But this year’s strategy emphasizes flexibility. Josh Williams earned his place not just with his rushing chops, but with standout pass protection, return ability, and special teams value, making him too valuable to risk losing to waivers.

Meanwhile, Bucky Irving emerges from a stellar rookie campaign ranked among the league’s elite at his position. His dynamic passing-game production and effectiveness between the tackles make him the clear centerpiece. Rachaad White continues to hold value as a versatile complement, especially in third-down and pass-blocking duties. Sean Tucker, with his explosive efficiency, adds another layer of threat in multiple-down scenarios.

This also aligns with what the Bucs have attempted to do this offseason: reimagine their special teams. With new rules that make a touchback now the 35-yard line, more returns will be imminent, meaning that truly talented returners are needed.

Tucker and Williams have both spent time returning kicks this preseason.
