Commanders to host free-agent WR Kendrick Bourne

The Washington Commanders are still on the search for wide receiver help. Two days after finalizing its initial 53-man roster, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Washington has scheduled a visit with free agent Kendrick Bourne next week.

The Commanders are one of two teams, along with the San Francisco 49ers, that will host Bourne. He’ll be in San Francisco on Monday and Washington on Tuesday. Bourne has the framework of a deal set up with teams if he chooses to sign.

Bourne, 30, is available after the New England Patriots surprisingly released him, one day after he made their 53-man roster. Bourne has familiarity with both the 49ers and the Commanders. San Francisco signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2017, and he spent his first four NFL seasons there. Washington general manager Adam Peters was the vice president of player personnel for the 49ers during that time. Bourne also played two seasons with current Commanders wideout Deebo Samuel.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Bourne has enjoyed a productive career. Bourne has played in 111 career games, with 34 starts. He has 292 receptions for 3,714 yards, averaging 12.7 yards per reception with 22 touchdowns.

The Portland, Oregon, native played collegiately at Eastern Washington.

Washington only kept five receivers on its initial 53-man roster, but did keep several on the practice squad. Bourne would not only provide experience, but he could step in and play right away, much like Olamide Zaccheaus and Noah Brown did last season for the Commanders.
