LB Devin Lloyd not listed as outright starter

LB Devin Lloyd is not listed as an outright starter on the Jaguars’ Week 1 depth chart.

The Jacksonville Jaguars released their official depth chart ahead of the Week 1 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. As always, we had several takeaways from it, but the most notable is that linebacker Devin Lloyd isn’t listed as an outright starter.

At the Jaguars’ middle linebacker position, the starting spot is listed as Lloyd or Ventrell Miller.

What this means for Sunday’s game remains to be seen. Is Lloyd the starter, but Miller is lurking if things don’t go smoothly? Or will we see both players taking snaps in this game?

Lloyd is coming off a solid 2024 season, which included him making 106 of his 111 tackle attempts, and he was among PFF’s highest-graded linebackers in the run game.

In coverage, he allowed 11.6 yards per catch with one interception and one pass breakup.

The Jaguars, however, remain non-committal to Lloyd long-term. He is entering the final year of his rookie deal with Jacksonville, after the team declined his fifth-year option for 2026 earlier this offseason.

Miller was a third-round pick by the Jaguars in 2023. In his second season, he would play 482 snaps, which included making 71 out of 88 tackle attempts with two pass breakups on 32 targets in coverage.

When there is a new defensive coordinator and a new scheme being implemented, there is going to be a greater opportunity for a potential shake-up in the starting lineup. While Miller was a backup previously, perhaps he better fits what Anthony Campanile is looking for at linebacker.

Again, we will see how the playing time between these two linebackers shakes out on Sunday. However, I will also guess that this will be a fluid situation, so what we see in Week 1–either way–doesn’t mean that will be the case for the remainder of the season.
