Michigan Wolverines football coach Sherrone Moore will not be with his team as they host the Central Michigan Chippewas at the Big House before traveling to Lincoln, Nebraska, to take on Matt Rhule’s Cornhuskers.

Moore received a “failure to cooperate” violation from the NCAA for the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal.

He’ll be suspended for two games before returning in October for a matchup with the Wisconsin Badgers at home on October 4. There’s a fear that these next two games before then, which Michigan should be favored in, could do irreversible damage.

The Athletic’s Austin Meek is more concerned about the possible effects of Moore’s absence than he is about the team’s 24-13 loss to the Oklahoma Sooners at Gaylord Memorial on Saturday.

“This wasn’t a make-or-break game for Michigan. It was more like a proving ground to see how far the Wolverines have to go to be considered an elite team again. The answer: quite a ways,” Meek wrote.

“As of now, the Wolverines don’t have another ranked team on their schedule before they face No. 1 Ohio State to end the regular season. But they have some tough games ahead, including road trips to Nebraska and USC. Michigan will also be without coach Sherrone Moore for the next two weeks as he serves as a suspension related to the Connor Stalions sign-stealing investigation. It will be incumbent on Michigan’s team leaders to make sure this loss doesn’t spiral while Moore is suspended.”

Moore outsources play-calling to offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. From an X’s and O’s standpoint, his absence shouldn’t change the gameplan much, if at all.

The emotional leadership void is the bigger issue. Moore has already willed his team to a win over the eventual champion Ohio State Buckeyes at the “Shoe.” Not having him for a Big Ten road matchup is at least somewhat worrisome.
