Will 49ers WR play vs. Saints?

The San Francisco 49ers can’t get past the injury obstacle standing in the way of their receiving corps.

After missing OTAs and most of training camp with a calf injury, wide receiver Jauan Jennings is now dealing with a shoulder injury he suffered while running a route in the third quarter against the Seattle Seahawks. Jennings was unable to return to the game and early indications were that he might miss significant time.

Now things are more up in the air on the 49ers’ leading wide receiver from last season. Here’s what we know about Jennings’ status leading up to a Week 2 showdown with the New Orleans Saints:

Jauan Jennings injury update

Jennings got testing done on his injured left shoulder that didn’t show any major damage. He didn’t participate in practice Wednesday and Thursday, but he was able to get a limited session in Friday.

Will Jauan Jennings play vs. New Orleans Saints?

The 49ers have officially listed Jennings as ‘questionable’ for Sunday’s game. It may be a gametime decision depending on how well he can move his shoulder in warmups. We’ll know officially 90 minutes before Sunday’s 10:00am Pacific Time kickoff when the team releases its inactive list.

What Kyle Shanahan said about Jauan Jennings’s injury update

There’s not a huge urge from Shanahan to give in-depth updates on injured players. He simply said “questionable” when asked his confidence level on Jennings and left tackle Trent Williams playing in Sunday’s game. It doesn’t sound like much has changed since Wednesday when Shanahan was asked if Jennings was a long shot to play.

“I’m not going to put anything on it,” Shanahan said. “He’s got a chance to play and hopefully he will.”

Who will start for the 49ers if Jauan Jennings is out?

It gets tricky in the 49ers receiving corps if Jennings can’t go. Ricky Pearsall will be the unquestioned No. 1 option. Recently-acquired Kendrick Bourne could be first up in the WR2 rotation, but expect Marquez Valdes-Scantling to get some run there as well. Rookie Jordan Watkins is also not on the practice report and may see some time at receiver as the 49ers try to mix and match their WR snaps. We probably won’t see a clear-cut WR2 if Jennings is out, and instead a variety of options to try and maximize the talent left on the 49ers depth chart.
