Scott Norris, who spent more than two decades at Men’s Wearhouse, has joined Friar Tux, a family-owned formalwear retailer, as president.
The Anaheim, Calif.-based Friar Tux was founded in 1974 and operates an e-commerce site as well as 24 showrooms across California and in Las Vegas. Norris succeeds Marc Atkin, who is retiring after serving as president for the past two years.
Norris will work to strengthen Friar Tux’s digital and e-commerce platforms, expand its brick-and-mortar presence, maximize financial performance and build the company’s team. He will also seek to escalate the customer experience by enhancing its AI-powered Fit Calculator, a tool that helps with sizing online.
Norris started his career at Macy’s in 1991 before joining Men’s Wearhouse as executive vice president and general merchandise manager in 1996. He became brand president of the company and its Moores division in Canada in 2014. However, in 2019, under the management at the time, and prior to the company’s bankruptcy filing, he exited the business. More recently Norris was with The Black Tux, an online formalwear company.
“The Black Tux was a great experience for me because they’re such a leader in the digital space,” Norris told WWD. “But this was an opportunity to run a company rather than just help a company.”
He said that while Friar Tux may not be as well known outside the West Coast, he’s hoping to change that. “It’s been around over 50 years as a regional player,” he said. But because of its online expertise, expansive selection and superior customer service, he believes it can expand across the country. Friar Tux offers one of the largest selections of suits, tuxedos, shoes and accessories in the U.S. and is the exclusive formalwear retailer for the Michael Kors Performance Collection, which features Coolmax technology and Sorona stretch fabrics, perfect for hot-weather occasions, Norris said.
“Few companies have the privilege of dressing someone for their prom, then later for their wedding — and eventually as the parents of brides and grooms,” Norris said. “It’s a legacy of trust, style and service that I’m proud to help carry forward. Looking ahead, I’m excited to build on Friar Tux’s strong foundation — developing our exceptional leadership team, expanding our product line and advancing our technology.”
The company sells or rents tuxedos and suits and offers either in-store or virtual style sessions with real people who work with customers to assure the right fit and style. “And our online platform allows us to ship nationally,” he said. Friar Tux also has a stylist magazine online that offers tips for weddings and a lifestyle look at the products offered at the company.
The company offers one women’s suit option in four colors, and Norris believes that’s a growth opportunity for the future.
“On behalf of our entire Friar Tux family, I’d like to welcome and congratulate Scott on his new role as president,” said Mike Meskell, founder and co-owner of Friar Tux. “Scott’s proven leadership in scaling retail and rental businesses makes him the right choice to guide Friar Tux into its next chapter.”
