McVay talked about what Brown brings to the cornerback group, including his speed
The Los Angeles Rams’ secondary suffered a significant blow in Week 2 when Ahkello Witherspoon broke his clavicle in the win over the Tennessee Titans. He’s expected to be sidelined for around 12 weeks, putting any potential return to the field near the end of the regular season.
With Witherspoon out, the Rams quickly signed former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tre Brown on Tuesday, adding him to their 53-man roster. Brown has dealt with injuries of his own and was on IR as recently as August before the San Francisco 49ers cut him, but it sounds like he’s healthy now and ready to contribute.
Sean McVay shared a bit on what stood out about Brown when the Rams were looking for cornerback help, citing his physicality and speed, among other traits.
“He’s a guy that coaching against him, he’s physical, stout at the point of attack, has good short space quickness and lateral agility,” McVay said. “There’s a familiarity having gone against him when he was in Seattle. I think he brings some speed to the perimeter where he can do some different things, hopefully to potentially help us on special teams.”
The Rams already have three starting cornerbacks in Emmanuel Forbes Jr., Cobie Durant and Darious Williams. McVay is confident in those three players, and they also have Josh Wallace on the roster, too.
In all likelihood, Brown won’t have to play very much on defense, if at all, barring another injury to someone else on the depth chart. Still, McVay is happy to have someone with 39 games of experience and 13 starts under his belt, just in case the Rams need additional help at the position.
