How Aespa’s Giselle Perfects No-Makeup Makeup

On the day that Giselle shares her beauty secrets with Vogue, she doesn’t plan on going full glam. “What I’m going to show you today is kind of a no-makeup makeup look,” the Aespa singer and rapper says after a brief skin-care regimen that includes cleanser, face cream, Clé de Peau oil, and a swipe of Laneige lip balm. “I feel like with too much makeup I can look a little…cakey. That’s the word!” While Giselle keeps her products minimal, focusing on pastel basics from Korean brand Either&, she adds one step to her routine that changes her entire look. (And no, it’s not dyeing her hair a “random” shade of pink, though she has done that too.)

After creating a lightweight face base with Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer and a few dabs of concealer, the 24-year-old sets her sights, so to speak, on the eyes. “I have a long face,” she says, fingers framing her gaze. “I need to give some impact here to even it out.” To start, she defines her eyebrows with Kosas’s dual-ended pencil. But she can’t go any further until she reveals her biggest beauty secret of all. “Before I get into eye makeup, I’m going to choose my lenses,” Giselle says, picking up two sets of colored contact lenses. “The way I look changes a lot with which lens I wear.”

Today, she puts on one light-brown lens just to see its effects, but quickly dismisses the look as scary. “The ones that I usually wear are just black,” she shares. And after popping in two darker lenses, the “Black Mamba” chanteuse is satisfied with the impact. “I look alive!” she remarks. “This is the first time anyone has ever seen me put contacts in.”

Lenses settled, the K-pop star is ready to move on to her next steps. She applies a swirl of neutral eyeshadow; then she uses MAC’s Brushstroke Liquid Eyeliner Pen to dash on a precise cat eye. Taking care to create matching lines on either side, the musician says: “The most important thing for me with makeup is, no matter what look you do—what color, whatever—it has to be symmetrical…. And eyeliner, if it’s lopsided, I can’t.” She can, however, go without the beauty staple. “Even when I don’t do eyeliner or as much makeup—you know, actual no-makeup makeup—I just do eyebrows and lip gloss,” she says. On that note, Giselle blows a glossy kiss with lips coated in Fenty’s hydrating oil. And after signing off with a sweet “bye-bye,” she heads out to enjoy a rare day off.
