As we’ve been tracking the newest trends from the designer runways in Europe, we haven’t forgotten to also take a peek at what attendees are wearing to the shows. As the Milan Fashion Week progress, it’s become clear that one key fashion staple is ruling street style so far: the midi skirt. Hitting just below the knee or falling a bit lower (but not so long as to be considered tea-length), this versatile garment is all over the Milan streets right now.
This is a major evolution from what we saw in the Italian fashion capital just last season (lots and lots of mini skirts), and it’s interesting to see the many directions in which the street-style crowd is taking this eclectic trend.
Lots of showgoers went maximalist with statement-making midi skirts: Model Paloma Elsesser wore a pleated baby-pink Prada one with black flames curling up from the hem, while Vanity Fair Fashion Director Nicole Chapoteau donned a vivid lemon-yellow leather style. Others embraced zebra prints, fuzzy fabrics, sheer lace and ombré knits for their more-is-more midi-skirt looks.
On the opposite end of the spectrum were those who went minimalist with the trend, like influencer Meredith Duxbury who chose a simple black oversized Jil Sander midi, which she wore over chunky black boots. Other attendees did classic tweed pencil skirts in below-the-knee lengths, paper-bag-drawstring iterations in solid colors, and low-slung 2000s-inspired versions — the latter often paired (just as we did in the 2000s) with ballet flats. It’s also worth noting that when it comes to silhouette, anything goes: A-lines, columns, even modernist wavy hourglass shapes.
