Game Thread #160: Milwaukee Brewers (96-63) vs. Cincinnati Reds (81-78)

With only three games left this season, both the Brewers and the Reds still have something to play for.

If the Brewers win tonight, they will officially lock up the number one seed — guaranteeing them home field advantage throughout the postseason. The same is true if the Phillies lose to Joe Ryan and the Twins later. The only way the Brewers could end up as the two-seed is if the Phillies win each of their last three games and they lose each of their last three games.

Cincinnati, meanwhile, has a playoff berth on the line in this series. The Reds are now just one game back of the New York Mets for the second NL Wild Card spot.

Milwaukee had a much-needed off-day yesterday after a stretch in which they played nine games in nine days. Luckily, reinforcements are on their way:

In other pre-playoff news, Freddy Peralta should still start Sunday’s season finale, but he is likely to be on a pitch count per Adam McCalvy. Now, let’s talk about tonight’s game.

Tonight’s starting pitcher is Quinn Priester. You remember the thing that happens when Priester starts? Yeah, me too. I’m not messing around with jinxes this close to October. Hopefully Priester can keep his streak going in what will be his final regular-season start. He was lights-out in his last outing against the Reds, limiting them to two hits and one earned run over five innings in a game the Brewers would go on to win 9-1.

Cincinnati will give the ball to right-hander Zach Littell, acquired at the deadline from Tampa Bay in exchange for pitching prospects Adam Serwinowski and Brian Van Belle. Littell’s 4.62 ERA since joining the Reds is over a full run higher than it was prior to the trade (3.58), and he’s allowed four or more runs in four of his last six starts. His career ERA against Milwaukee, however, is a lot lower — 1.71 over 21 innings. Littell has made two starts against the Brewers, both of which came this year.

As for tonight’s lineup? LF/DH Christian Yelich, who usually hits somewhere in the heart of the order, is hitting leadoff for the fourth game in a row. Brewers manager Pat Murphy could be messing with Yelich’s spot in the lineup for a few different reasons:

Okay, you got me, the last one probably isn’t the case. Other than that, your guess is as good as mine.

Jackson Chourio, Brice Turang, William Contreras, and Sal Frelick make up the heart of tonight’s lineup behind Yelich. Andrew Vaughn hits sixth tonight after hitting fourth on Wednesday (due to the absence of Contreras, who got the day off). Rounding out the bottom of the lineup is Jake Bauers (in left field today), Andruw Monasterio (at third base) and Joey Ortiz.

Today’s game will be broadcast, per usual, on FanDuel Sports Wisconsin and the Brewers Radio Network. First pitch is slated for 7:10 pm.
