LeBron James comments on his future and the Lakers’ roster

Despite what some expected this summer, LeBron James reported to media day on Monday as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Even better, he seemed happy to still be a member of the Lakers.

This will be his record 23rd season in the NBA, and he said he’s excited about it. Of course, this will be the final season on his current contract, and while everyone is speculating on what may lie ahead for him beyond that, he says he isn’t concerned.

Via ESPN:

“It will have no impact,” James told ESPN. “I’m super excited about the challenges and the excitement of our team. We added some new guys. We got another year under our belt with our coaching staff from last year. Got a full year with Luka [Doncic] and another year with the guys that I’ve been with. So super excited about that.

“And I’m not worried about contracts at this point in my career. That doesn’t bother me at all. Super humbled to even have it, have a contract still and be able to play the game that I love still at this part of my career and take full advantage of it.”

James’ agent, Rich Paul, said in a statement issued in late June that he and James want to evaluate what’s best for the superstar moving forward in terms of competing for another NBA championship. But he seems to believe in the roster the Lakers have right now.

The Lakers added center Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart, a former Defensive Player of the Year, and forward Jake LaRavia this summer. At the very least, they have upgraded at the center position and added a capable and gritty defender in Smart.

James averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 8.2 assists a game last season. Although he will turn 41 years of age in December, he doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down anytime soon.
