Yahoo Top 10: Who survived upset Saturday to end up on top?

Us media folks really know what we’re doing, right?

The top two teams in the AP preseason poll — No. 1 Texas and No. 2 Penn State — are a combined 6-4 and both experienced rough road trips on what turned out to be Upset Saturday in college football. If you thought the Longhorns’ loss at Florida was bad, Penn State outdid it with perhaps the worst loss of the season at UCLA. The Bruins became the first 0-4 team since 1985 to beat a top-10 foe.

Guess who was No. 4 in the AP preseason poll? Clemson. The Tigers did get a trouncing victory at North Carolina on Saturday to improve to 2-3, sending Bill Belichick’s group into a spiral. So, three of the top four teams in the preseason poll are now a combined 8-7? Yes, that’s right.

There were three top-15 teams that took upset losses. Iowa State, previously undefeated, couldn’t escape unscathed either. The Cyclones fell at Cincinnati, leaving just two undefeated teams in the Big 12: Texas Tech, which beat Houston on Saturday, and BYU, which took care of West Virginia on Friday night.

But enough about all that. We have a new No. 1-ranked team. That’s right. The Hurricanes take the top spot from Oregon.

This week: beat Florida State 28-22

Next week: vs. Louisville

The Hurricanes might just have the best veteran quarterback in the country, best freshman and the best defensive line. Their O-line isn’t bad either. They play fast, physical and “violent,” as head coach Mario Cristobal said afterward. Against FSU, quarterback Carson Beck finished with four touchdowns.

Best win: 27-24 vs. Notre Dame

This week: Off

Next week: vs. Indiana

The Ducks got a week off after the cross-country victory in Happy Valley and before hosting the Hoosiers in what might be their most difficult opponent left on the schedule (yes, we’re for real). Do you see another top-10 team on Oregon’s schedule? No.

Best win: 30-24 at Penn State

This week: beat Minnesota 42-3

Next week: at Illinois

The Buckeyes and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia have not allowed more than nine points in a game this season. Their five opponents have scored a combined 26 points. The offense isn’t bad either. QB Julian Sayin, in his first year as a starter, threw for three touchdowns and had just four incompletions. RB Bo Jackson continued his tear too. He’s still averaging over 7 yards a carry this season.

Best win: 14-7 vs. Texas

This week: beat Kent State 44-0

Next week: vs. Texas (Dallas)

No John Mateer? No problem for backup Michael Hawkins, who threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as the Sooners’ defense pitched its first shutout since the season opener in 2023. Red River is up next. Will Mateer return? It seems unlikely but you never know.

Best win: 24-13 vs. Michigan

This week: beat Mississippi State 31-9

Next week: vs. Florida

The Aggies turned a 7-3 halftime lead into a rout of the Bulldogs. RB Rueben Owens II rolled for 142 yards and nearly a 7-yard-a-carry average. A&M has some lumps — the occasional defensive gaffe and an offense that goes stretches without a score — but they’re 5-0 and that’s all that matters right now.

Best win: 41-40 at Notre Dame

This week: Off

Next week: at Oregon

Overshadowed by Indiana’s explosive offense, coach Curt Cignetti’s defense is one of the best in the country. The Hoosiers are fourth in points allowed (9.6 a game) and fifth in total defense (221.4 yards per game). Next week will be, by far, their stiffest test yet as they head to the Pacific Northwest to face QB Dante Moore and UO’s top-10 offense. It’s good on good. Better yet, it’s really good on really good.

Best win: 63-10 vs. Illinois

This week: Off

Next week: vs. Arkansas

Bobby Petrino and the Hogs come calling next weekend. You’ll recall that one of Tennessee’s two regular season losses last year came at the hands of Arkansas. This Tennessee team feels more well rounded. The Vols will be ready for the Hogs and then we get the showdown at Alabama that could go a long way in deciding who’s in Atlanta for the SEC title bout.

Best win: 41-34 at Mississippi State

This week: Off

Next week: vs. Washington State

Has any coach done a better job than Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss — at a historically difficult place to consistently win? He’s barreling toward a third straight double-digit win season in Oxford, which has never happened in school history. In fact, the Rebels won 10 games twice in more than 50 years before Kiffin arrived. And he’s doing it this year with a Division III transfer QB.

Best win: 24-19 vs. LSU

This week: beat Kentucky 35-14

Next week: at Auburn

The Wildcats managed just three third-down conversions and 270 yards against a Kirby Smart defense that floundered just a week ago against Alabama. Georgia showed a nice recovery after the loss to the Crimson Tide. Now, it’s time for the Oldest Rivalry in the Deep South to recommence on the Plains.

Best win: 44-41 at Tennessee

This week: beat Houston 35-11

Next week: vs. Kansas

Did you know that the Red Raiders have outscored opponents 192-12 in the first three quarters this season? Joey McGuire’s group made plenty of offseason headlines for the money spent on the roster and, so far, it’s paying off quite literally. Tech had a 300-yard passer, 100-yard rusher and 100-yard receiver on Saturday in Houston.

Best win: 34-10 at Utah

Dropped: No one.
