As the respective No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks of the 2024 NFL Draft, Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels will be linked forever. The comparisons between these two prodigious signal-callers in pro football-starved markets will never stop, as incessant as these sorts of discussions can be sometimes. It also helps that it looks like both Williams and Daniels are already meeting their massive on-paper potential as special quarterbacks.
Ahead of a monumental Monday Night Football matchup between Williams’ Chicago Bears and Daniels’ Washington Commanders, Bears head coach Ben Johnson was asked about the built-in dynamic between Williams and Daniels as a new great quarterback rivalry. (Note: It sure would be nice if the NFC had its own perennial battle of playmaking titans for once!)
NFL POWER RANKINGS: Bears and Commanders look to validate themselves in Monday night duel
After reiterating that he wanted the Bears coaching job expressly because of Williams, Johnson did nothing to downplay a battle between Williams and Daniels. If anything, Johnson only added fuel to the fire that should excite football fans everywhere:
As a noted high-level offensive playcaller, I think it’s significant to hear someone like Johnson proclaim that Williams and Daniels, both of whom are only in their second year in the NFL, will be duking it out for years to come. You don’t say that kind of thing lightly. That’s how you know that he’s extremely impressed with Williams and Daniels. That’s how confident Johnson is in both quarterbacks already.
If Williams and Daniels really are destined to become the NFC’s version of Patrick Mahomes against Josh Allen, then, hoo boy, I can’t wait to see what these two young playmakers have in store for us on Monday night.
Dearest readers, to put it lightly: Get your popcorn ready.
