Jordan BrandExec Discusses Bringing World of Flight to Philadelphia

Milan, Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing and now Philadelphia. Those are the locations of the only Jordan World of Flight stores in the world.

The former locations require little explanation, as they sit in some of the most shoppable cities in the world. Philadelphia immediately stands out as an outlier, but Jordan Brand is leaning much more into a narrative to explain why it chose the city as the first in the U.S. to get a World of Flight.

Michael Jordan played his final NBA game in Philadelphia, and the city is also home to Jalen Hurts, the Eagles quarterback who’s become one of the most prominent faces of Jordan Brand. 76ers player Jared McCain is also a Jordan athlete, and the brand’s Wings scholarship program began with students from the city in 2015.

“You take that combination of purpose, passion for sport, passion for community, and our intersection of sport times culture, it couldn’t be a better fit,” Jeremy Bolds, Jordan Brand general manager of North America, told Footwear News during a preview of the store Thursday evening. “Their passion for sport, community and culture sits very well with Jordan Brand, and this store gives us the opportunity to show pinnacle retail, to offer curated collections and storytelling that you really don’t get to see from other distribution points.”

With nearly 7,000 square feet in two stories, World of Flight sits in a historic building at 1617 Walnut Street in Rittenhouse Square. Stone floor and walls host medal features, including detailing that replicates the diamond on the Chicago Bulls’ shorts and Philadelphia’s historical markers. A wooden staircase leads to the second floor and a mezzanine that looks over it. Also hovering above is an expansive skylight.

Outside, people were already lining up Thursday for the Friday morning opening. Some even attempted to do so as early as Monday.

Apparel dominates the first floor and continues onto the second, which then features two walls of sneakers and a customization room for footwear, apparel and accessories. Many of the customization options are exclusive to the city that they call out, as is a range of apparel showcasing Hurts and some of the local artists whose work appears on the store’s walls.

This room is also home to a display including all six sneakers Jordan wore while winning an NBA championship, a football autographed by Donovan McNabb, an autographed Hurts jersey, Virgil Abloh’s Air Jordan 5, and albums from local-born artists including DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Roots.

On opening day, World of Flight will launch a restock for the Air Jordan 3 Black Cement, Air Jordan 3 Black Cat, Air Jordan 5 Grape, Air Jordan 10 Steel, Air Jordan 4 Fear and Air Jordan 4 Orchid on a first-come-first-serve basis.

From Saturday through Dec. 15, restocks will also be given for the Air Jordan 12 Flu Game, Swarovski x Air Jordan 1 Low, Air Jordan 4 White Cement, Air Jordan 14 Black Toe, Air Jordan 5 Black Metallic Reimagined and Air Jordan 14 Ferrari.

Bolds said Jordan Brand has ambitious plans to eventually bring World of Flight to other American cities, but for now, the focus is firmly on Philadelphia, where a block party on Friday afternoon will coincide with the store’s grand opening.

Preparing World of Flight Philadelphia ready to open took longer than expected because of the requirements for construction in a historic building, but Jordan Brand sees the wait as worth it in order to execute such an authentic space.

“We believe retail is a way to connect in a tangible way with consumers,” Bolds said, “And we want people to come and experience the best expression that is World of Flight.”
