Anfernee Simons on making an impact for the Celtics as a bench player

By the end of the coming 2025-26 regular season, new Boston Celtics guard Anfernee Simons may very well be starting for his new team — or playing for another one entirely. But for the moment, the former Portland Trail Blazers guard will likely see at least some games early in Boston’s current campaign coming off the bench. And as far as he is concerned, that dynamic should not be an issue for him, given it won’t be the first time he’s been a reserve in the NBA.

“Obviously, it’s a different team,” said Simons via CLNS Media after the Celtics’ 138-107 win vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday (Oct. 12). “But early in my career, when I came off the bench, I just tried to understand the flow of the game, what we feel like … we needed to when I came into the game.”

“So it’s always at first, it was difficult, obviously, coming in and trying to find our rhythm offensively,” explained the Florida native. “And I haven’t been playing this whole time, so I’m just feeling out how the game is being played.”

“You get to get a snapshot before you go in of how the defense is playing certain players, and you might get the same coverage,” he continued. “So you get a good idea of how the team’s going to play.”

“And then I think for earlier in my career … me and my trainer, used to do drills where we would come in late at night, and I’ll sit down and for a second, and he told me to get up, come in and shoot a 3, and I’ve got to make it. Certain drills like that helped me to be able to come in and be pretty productive pretty early in the game.”
