The Bears continue to win football games that they would not have won in recent years. Matt Eberflus has stained this team; expectations were that the Bears were going to lose this football game because nothing went their way again. The refs gave the Commanders around 10 questionable calls. The Bears were without the most accurate kicker in Bears history, Cairo Santos, and had to lean on backup kicker Jake Moody, who recently got cut by the 49ers because he was not good enough. The Bears still won this football game.
Solid start under Ben Johnson
Offensively, the Bears continue to have success on the first drive, something that never happened last season, a huge reason for hope that this team is different. Caleb was fantastic in the first quarter. He regressed in the second quarter, and Jayden Daniels outplayed him for the majority of the second half. The thing about good starts, though, is that if a team struggles midway through a game, the good start means that victory is still attainable. With a bad start, a horrible second quarter means the ballgame is over.
Resilient Caleb Williams
Caleb, facing adversity, kept his head up and fought. There were many penalties that squelched opportunities for the Bears to score and capitalize on the Commanders’ mistakes. The Bears didn’t let that stop them from winning this game, however.
D’Andre Swift
D’Andre Swift set the tone for this rushing attack and was the MVP of this game. He seemed to have little to no success this season up to date, but last night he had his best game as a Bear. He put this team on his back. He had a 55-yard receiving touchdown, bringing this game closer late, and he drove the Bears down the field on the last drive with 35 yards rushing. Swift had 108 yards rushing and 67 yards receiving on the day.
Forcing turnovers
The defense continues to force turnovers and give the Bears’ offense opportunities to win the football game. Jaquan Brisker had a great interception, and there was one forced fumble early in the game. The final fumble was a complete fluke, but the Bears’ defense fought all game long against one of the NFL’s top offenses. Jayden Daniels had the refs on his side this entire game, but the Bears’ defense still put their heads down and kept fighting.
Kept fighting
If the Bears had lost this game, there would be many excuses to point to as to why things did not go the Bears’ way. If this game went the other way, the Bears would have had to have a conversation with the league about the poor officiating in this game. The Bears still adapted and overcame adversity in this game.
Bottom-line business
What a significant win for this team. Last season, a loss to the Commanders derailed the rest of the season, leading to nine straight losses. This time around, winning in this fashion can carry the Bears to a special season at the start of the Ben Johnson era. This team has culture now; the Bears have juice. Adversity only makes this team stronger, and that is not something that could have been said about the Bears in quite some time. Now it’s on to a winnable game against the Saints on Sunday.
