IndyStar Super 25 high school football rankings for Week 9

A look at this week’s IndyStar Super 25 power poll, which ranks the top-25 teams in the state regardless of class. Going into Week 9:

1. Brownsburg (8-0): If not for a 30-23 loss to Hamilton Southeastern in last year’s regular season finale, the defending 6A champion Bulldogs would have a 21-game winning streak. Brownsburg hosts HSE on Friday. Last week: 1.

2. New Palestine (8-0): The Dragons are putting together one of the most dominant seasons in recent history. Senior Garrett Ranes (53 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries) leads the New Palestine defense. The Dragons can close out an undefeated regular season with a win at Delta. Last week: 2.

3. Carmel (7-1): The Greyhounds rolled to a 42-7 win over Warren Central. Senior Will Massey (81 tackles, nine tackles for loss, two sacks) is having a big season for a defense that is allowing just 12.9 points per game. Carmel closes the season at Lawrence Central. Last week: 3.

4. Crown Point (8-0): The Bulldogs are one win from a fourth consecutive perfect regular season. A home game against 6-2 Michigan City is all that stands in Crown Point’s way. Last week: 4.

5. Westfield (6-2): The Shamrocks rallied in the fourth quarter for a 14-7 win over Fishers. Alex Aramboles has 51 tackles, 21 tackles for loss and 11 sacks to the lead the Westfield defense. Up next: at Franklin Central. Last week: 5.

6. Center Grove (7-1): The Trojans bounced back from a loss to Cathedral with a 38-35 win over Lawrence North. Center Grove is at Bloomington South to close the season, which is the first game between the programs since 2009 and first in the regular season since 1997. Last week: 6.

7. Fishers (5-3): The Tigers let a fourth-quarter lead get away in a 14-7 loss to Westfield. Fishers was hurt by four turnovers. The Tigers close the regular season at home against Zionsville. Last week: 7.

8. Lawrence North (6-2): I have covered Lawrence North the past two weeks and believe this will be one of the toughest teams to beat in the tournament. The Wildcats average 46.5 points and 452 yards per game. Izayveon Moore has 1,224 rushing yards and 24 rushing TDs in seven games. Up next: vs. Pike. Last week: 8.

9. Decatur Central (6-2): The Hawks defeated Perry Meridian 42-0 for a sixth consecutive win. Crazy stat: Decatur Central averages 295 yards rushing per game but the leading rusher, Braylon Morris, has just 534 yards. The Hawks have eight players with more than 100 rushing yards. Up next: Franklin. Last week: 12.

10. Cathedral (5-3): The Irish lost 17-10 at Covington Catholic (Ky.). Jimmy Pappas ran for 120 yards on 31 carries. Cathedral closes the regular season at Warren Central. Last week: 9.

11. Bishop Chatard (7-1): The Trojans defeated Tri-West 42-13 behind a big day from senior running back Danny Adams (125 rushing yards) and senior quarterback Jack Harrington (146 passing yards in one half). Chatard closes at home against Cincinnati Elder (Ohio). Last week: 11.

12. Warren Central (5-3): The Warriors look to rebound from losses to Lawrence North (63-48) and Carmel (42-7) the past two weeks. It will not be easy with Cathedral visiting. Warren Central defeated the Irish 34-28 last year. Last week: 10.

13. Bloomington South (8-0): The Panthers cruised to a 38-7 win over Brebeuf Jesuit as Jalen Williams caught five passes for 95 yards and three TDs. Big game this week as South hosts Center Grove. Last week: 13.

14. East Central (7-1): Since a 32-7 loss to Lawrence North, East Central has outscored five opponents 270-20. Colton Bellman has 1,034 rushing yards and 10 rushing TDs to lead the Trojans, who have a tough one this week at Roncalli. Last week: 14.

15. Merrillville (6-2): Junior quarterback Michael Hill Jr. is completing 67% of his passes for 2,367 yards and 23 TDs. The Pirates have three receivers – Mikel Smoot, Cameron Jordan and Rynell Lewis – with at least 40 catches and 590 yards. Up next: vs. Chesterton. Last week: 15.

16. Penn (8-0): The Kingsmen have not been tested since Week 2, knocking off New Prairie 49-0 last week. This week should be tougher at 8-0 South Bend St. Joseph. Last week: 16.

17. Hamilton Southeastern (5-3): HSE defeated Franklin Central 38-35 for a second consecutive win. The Royals, the last team to defeat Brownsburg, finish the regular season on the road against the Bulldogs. Last week: 18.

18. Avon (4-4): Logan Strano’s 89-yard touchdown run helped to propel the Orioles to a 14-7 win over Zionsville. Andre Warfield had 84 yards on the ground and a TD. Up next: vs. Noblesville. Last week: 19.

19. Lafayette Jeff (7-1): The Bronchos defeated Marion 53-8 as Trysten Barrett was 17-for-19 passing for 360 yards and six TDs. Bryce Vanostran had eight catches for 202 yards and two TDs. Up next: vs. Muncie Central. Last week: 20.

22. Heritage Hills (7-1): The Patriots ran for 339 yards last week in a 56-0 win over North Posey, including 141 yards and two TDs from quarterback Jett Goldsberry. Up next: at Boonville. Last week: 23.
