Barcelona forward could end up playing for Atletico Madrid – report

According to reports from Poland, as covered by SPORT, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone holds Robert Lewandowski in high regard and would be open to signing the veteran forward on a free transfer.

It goes without saying that Lewandowski’s future at Barcelona has become a hot topic in the wake of his second injury, which has raised concerns about his fitness after national team duties.

As such, Polish journalist Mateusz Święcicki has suggested that while AC Milan could be an option, he believes Lewandowski may spend one final season at Atlético Madrid.

“He could be successful with Sorloth, and Atlético has already signed David Villa and Luis Suárez in the past. In addition, there are personal issues to be resolved,” Święcicki explained.

It is said that Simeone sees Lewandowski as a forward who could bring experience and goals to the team, much like previous former Barcelona stars.

What is Barcelona’s stance?

Despite outside interest, Lewandowski still prioritises staying at Barcelona, even if it means accepting a reduced role and salary adjustment.

The club, however, is closely monitoring the situation and will not make a final decision until the end of the season.

Lewandowski’s recent injuries suggest that Barcelona might allow him to leave once his contract ends in order to save on his high wages.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are also actively exploring the market for new centre-forwards to plan a signing that balances quality with financial prudence.

In that regard, recent reports have revealed that the club is in talks with Dusan Vlahovic, discussing the possibility of a free transfer.

Atletico Madrid have a history

Atletico Madrid, known for capitalising on opportunities arising from Barcelona’s squad decisions, have a history of making smart sporting and financial moves from their city rivals, and Lewandowski could represent another such opportunity.

In the past, the La Liga rivals have signed Luis Suarez and David Villa from Barcelona.

While Lewandowski’s heart may be set on staying at Barça, his long-term future remains uncertain, and Atletico Madrid, with Simeone’s interest, could be waiting in the wings for a strategic acquisition.
