Brooks Brothers, Engineered Garments Partner to Reimagine Formalwear

Brooks Brothers has teamed with Engineered Garments to reimagine formalwear.

The 207-year-old retailer and the New York-based brand founded by Daiki Suzuki in 1999 have developed a collection for the store’s Black Fleece label that offers a modern take on the traditional menswear category.

The line is infused with workwear references and includes a denim tuxedo jacket with satin-peaked lapels paired with relaxed-fit, wide-leg trousers in a utilitarian cut, as well as denim and oxford cravat shirts influenced by a Brooks Brothers shirt from the 1960s called the Clarney.

Suzuki said Brooks Brothers is “a brand I’ve known and loved since my youth, one whose history, iconic creations, style and philosophy all deeply resonate with me.”

The project began with a conversation between Suzuki, Brooks Brothers chief executive officer Ken Ohashi and creative director Michael Bastian, who suggested exploring a new direction outside of Engineered Garments’ signature casualwear. “That comment served as the trigger for this project,” Suzuki said. “The goal was to create a new interpretation of formalwear that balances the seemingly opposing extremes of formality and casual ease.”

“Brooks Brothers has always honored its heritage while finding ways to evolve American style,” said Ohashi. “Remarkably, over the last two centuries, innovation has been as much a part of the brand as tradition — and this is particularly true of our formal clothing, like dinner jackets and furnishings. Partnering with Daiki and Engineered Garments allowed us to explore formalwear codes in an entirely new light — mixing tradition with unexpected creativity in a way that feels both authentic and fresh.”

The limited-edition Brooks Brothers x Engineered Garments collection will be available beginning Wednesday at the retailer’s global flagship at 195 Broadway, as well as online at Brooks Brothers and Engineered Garments’ website, nepenthesny.com.
