Dolphins Quinn Ewers named in ESPN top 100 NFL Draft picks

Quinn Ewers was drafted in the seventh round to the Miami Dolphins.

Quinn Ewers’ draft journey was one of the most notable storylines of the 2025 NFL Draft. Once projected as a possible early-round pick, Ewers slid to the seventh round, where the Miami Dolphins selected him with the 231st overall pick.

Ewers, who finished his Texas career third in school history in completions (737), passing yards (9,128), and touchdowns (68), entered the draft after leading the Longhorns to consecutive College Football Playoff appearances. Despite his production, he was the final quarterback taken in the draft, with teams reportedly concerned about his arm strength and injuries that limited him in 2024.

Despite his late pick by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, ESPN’s Matt Miller ranked Ewers as the 59th-best pick in the entire draft, labeling him a “developmental starter” with the potential to grow into a larger role-especially given Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa’s injury history.  Miller noted it was “surprising that he remained on the board until Round 7,” attributing his fall to teams’ reluctance to draft backup quarterbacks in the middle rounds.

The process leading up to his selection was filled with uncertainty. Ewers had interviews with several teams, including the Jaguars, Titans, Jets, Saints, Steelers, Raiders, and Colts, but saw other quarterbacks drafted ahead of him as the rounds progressed. The wait became “excruciating,” as Ewers watched teams pass on him through the middle rounds.

“I graded Ewers as a “developmental starter,” and he landed with a team where he can evolve into that (while also having potential opportunities, given Tua Tagovailoa’s injury history). The fact that he was still available in Round 7 is shocking, but teams are hesitant to draft backup QBs in the middle rounds in this era of team-building.” – Miller, ESPN.
