Calls Mount for Umpire's Firing After Red Sox's Loss to Royals

An already trying week for Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox got even worse on Friday night.

While much of the focus understandably remained on Devers’ public feud with Red Sox executive Craig Breslow, the All-Star DH and teammates also suffered a 2-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals. Devers went 1-for-5 and brought home Boston’s sole run during the 12-inning defeat.

The Red Sox fans who were (and are) frustrated with Devers and his refusal to play first base found another target on Friday: home plate umpire Alex Tosi.

The popular @UmpScorecards X/Twitter account found that Tosi missed 15 of 161 total calls, or over 9%, at Kauffman Stadium. Nine of the 53 called strikes were actually balls, a disappointing 83% accuracy rate.

“Somehow it felt worse than this makes it look,” one user wrote.

Added another: “Dude doesn’t deserve a job.”

The 37-year-old Tosi is in his third season as a full-time umpire, and he ranked among the league’s more accurate umps last year. According to UmpScorecards, Tosi ranked fourth in accuracy (95.34%) and narrowly trailed Adam Hamari (95.39%) for third.

Tosi hasn’t had the same success thus far. Although his 93.65 accuracy rate isn’t quite near the bottom—nearly 30 of the 84 umpires who have worked a game behind the plate this season have a worse percentage—through the first month-plus, it’s nonetheless a steep decline from last year’s strong numbers.

“This ump in the Red Sox v Royals game is one of the worst [I’ve] ever seen,” read one post.

“Ump just handed this game to the Royals man,” another complained.

Only two umpires, Junior Valentine (96.13%) and Mark Ripperger (96.01%), have correctly called at least 96% of pitches thus far.

“I can’t wait until they go to a challenge system,” an X user wrote. “It’s going to show how bad these umps are.”
