The Secret Meaning Behind Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Couples Bangs

There are times when sucking as much meaning as I can out of the most recent photograph of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce to hit social media makes me feel vaguely insane (or, more positively, like a Cold War-era Kremlinologist working overtime to gather as much hidden data as I can about the Soviet Union from a single picture), but when I saw the ‘loved-up couple’—in Daily Mail parlance—out and about in Philadelphia with Kelce’s family for Mother’s Day, I was instantly struck by one thing: their hair.

Bangs are nothing new for Swift, of course (one could even argue they’re her signature hairstyle!) but am I wrong to think that Kelce is subtly matching his girlfriend’s locks? He’s definitely got sort of a long, swoopy-haired Disney-prince thing going on compared to when we last saw him in public, and I can’t say that I don’t enjoy it. When two queer women in my orbit step out with the same hairstyle, they’re usually sending a very clear message of commitment to the world (or they just both go to that one queer barber in Greenpoint), and I choose to believe that Swift and Kelce’s his-and-hers bangs also mean that they’re more united than ever. Sometimes couples look alike, and it’s a beautiful thing!

It’s been a while since we saw Swift and Kelce out in the world together, but that, too, speaks well of their relationship (in my less-than-expert opinion, anyway); we know from Swift’s extensive musical catalog how much pressure it can put on her romantic relationships to constantly be in the public eye, and if she and Kelce are holing up at home away from prying eyes like mine and giving each other matching haircuts, I’m fully in support of it. Important question: Do we think Swift has ever given herself crisis bangs after a breakup?
